Losing Shane, Dale, and the farm was a big help.
I agree with all of this. I think what I like about the first and second episodes is that they just showed us how the characters had changed and managed to survive over the winter without going into some long, drawn out dialogue about it. I hope that doesn't need to be spoilered for anyone... sorry if I gave away the huge plot surprise that the writers just skipped over winter...

I really enjoyed the first two episodes. I don't consider the show "scary" at all... it hardly ever gets me to jump. But, when Lori went in to give Herschel mouth to mouth and he woke up and grabbed her... I about jumped out of my chair. And I knew it was coming. And it still just got me.

Other great moments.. When Rick gives the prisoner guy the stare down and then just casually splits his head open with the machete. Hacking off Herschel's infected leg with a hatchet. And the dog food scene... That scene said a lot without anyone actually saying anything.

Second episode felt a little clunky. The other survivors story seemed unlikely, and it played out strangely. Was so glad Rick did what he did, because that other character was lame. Still better than most of last season though.

Homeland:

Only one-third of the way through, but this season actually deserves the Emmys it didn't deserve for last season. Brody is doing some ridiculous things, but the performances are really good and they're not dragging anything out. It's sort of like if Deb found out about Dexter in Season 2, episode 4.

Since I have no more baseball and no hockey to watch this fall, I am very happy season 4 of Sons of Anarchy is finally coming to Netflix this weekend. Then I can finally watch the season 5 episodes hogging space on my DVR.

(I was late to the SOA party, only picking up on it this summer for seasons 1-3 on Netflix.)

I didn't find it clunky, but I watched episode 1 & 2 back-to-back, so maybe that colors my impression of it. It was like 1 2-hour episode to me.

I liked the first two Walking Dead episodes.

I know this is late, but I really like Fringe. I'm halfway thru season 3.

I am also discovering it years late thanks to the recent GRB recommendation.

Fringe was good until last year, Season 4. They kind of f'd it up, IMO. Anna Torv and John Noble are both fantastic though.

If you've seen season 4:

Everyone forgetting the events of the first 3 seasons really hurt, and then whole "love conquers time and space" killed it for me. Reminded me of the Matrix when Neo is resurrected, seemingly because Trinity loves him so much. It would be different if that hadn't been done to death. Maybe it has to be this way, but it's frustrating when so many Hollywood sci-fi stories end up being resolved by either true love or God.

My favorite thing about Fringe, other than my guy Charlie Conway/Pacey, is that I don't ever think about it when I'm not watching it. I watch all the prestige cable dramas, as many of us do, and as much as I like Breaking Bad or Homeland, being able to shut my mind off with a fun sci fi show is cool.
