I heard a story about the trial of this Russian band on NPR. Listening to the NPR voice repeatedly say "[expletive] Riot" was pretty funny. And now this:

The usually sombre daily press briefing at the U.S. State Department took a farcical turn over the band’s name Tuesday when spokesman Patrick Ventrell mentioned U.S. concerns about the legal woes faced by both the band and anticorruption blogger Alexei Navalnyi, but tried to sidestep the group’s blush-inducing name.

The exchange ran as follows, according to a transcript on the State Department’s website:

Mr. Ventrell: We’re very concerned by these new charges, and so — not only regarding Mr. Navalnyi, but of course also the punk rock band and others. What we’ve seen are some serious concerns about the politically motivated prosecutions of the Russian opposition. So we’re deeply concerned.

Question: We’re so disappointed you didn’t say the name of the band.

Question: Yes, I was just going to ask you to – (laughter) – which punk band are you talking about?

Mr. Ventrell: They are indeed called — [expletive] Riot is the name of the band.

Question: Thank you.

The issue of the name has also come up during the trial of three band members charged with hooliganism for the performance of the song “Our Lady, Chase Putin Out!” in Christ the Saviour Cathedral just before March’s presidential election.

On Wednesday, prosecution witness Oleg Ugrik criticized the band’s name, which he translated as “festering orgy,” according to a live blog of the hearing by the Russian Legal Information Agency (which can be viewed in English here). Ugrik specifically used an adjective form of the Russian word for “pus,” suggesting he had perhaps looked up the wrong entry for the first word in the band’s name in an English-Russian dictionary.

He said others had told him it meant “something soft,” but that he didn’t believe it, causing the courtroom to burst into laughter. The band has said the name is an homage to the early 1990s feminist Riot Grrrl punk rock scene from which many of their favourite acts hailed.
