never been to Fall Creek Falls birds. The pics look great, but someone steered me away-saying it has a resort and is kind of domesticated. Have fun tho. Just kidding - I am sure you will have fun and is probably a good place to check out

Re: Camping, backpacking, hiking, et al
thank you dumb [expletive] laptop mousepad that randomly exits from my long message post without notice -- you save me from a ramblin drunk post.
Anyway - semi-ramble-a few pages back I mentioned being down a backpacking tent thanks to the Big Galoot shredding it. I feel less freedom without a BP tent sitting in my garage, even though I have no plans to go anywhere, and I could easily borrow one if I did.
So you know, I'm staring down the barrel of the Big REI LABOR DAY Sale up the street from me. A decent BP tent for 190. but I am saving the R and R money for an upcoming trip to Taos and some other expenses. not a good time for spurious spending.
Anyhow, i got to thinking, why the hell do I need the damn tent anyway. I have the rain fly/ poles and ground \cloth. They are a tent sort of. I'm pretty much a fair weather camper with regards to weather and elements anyway. Most time if the forecast or seasonal insects, snakes etc are hazardous, I'm not going in the first place. I am guessing, in my case 99 percent of the time, that shell of the tent is just some superstitious thing without any function. It hardly would keep out a dangerous animal. It would save some weight and leave more room for food and alcohol.
what say you GRB campers , buy a new tent now or skip it.?
Am I rite. or just drunk.

Check out the ultra light camping sites. They'll tell you that you don't need one.

We actually wouldn't be camping until Monday night. Our kids are off on Tuesday, too. Will definitely try to set up a reservation, though.lukethedrifter wrote:Might be hard to get into Hawn for an overnight this weekend.

If you don't mind a few bugs, go with what you have.Freed Roger wrote:thank you dumb [expletive] laptop mousepad that randomly exits from my long message post without notice -- you save me from a ramblin drunk post.

If you are in to ultralight but want some creature comforts, check out the awesome TarpTent line from Henry Shires. I have a 2-person Squall with the mesh, and it's awesome: huge, lightweight, takes up very little pack space. We used it on a 66 mile trek across Isle Royale in August. It was perfect for that.

Everest claimed 4 climbers, with an additional climber missing:
Eberhard Schaaf, a 61-year-old German doctor, Nepal-born Canadian Shriya Shah and South Korean mountaineer Song Won-bin died on Saturday as they descended the mountain after suffering from exhaustion and altitude sickness...Chinese climber Ha Wenyi and South Korean mountaineer Song Won-bin also died Saturday while descending the mountain...A Chinese national is still missing, but a Nepalese Sherpa guide are who had been reported missing is safe and has reached the base camp, according to Shrestha.

Odd that there are two South Korean mountaineers named Song Won-bin's who died climbing Everest on the same day.

Now at least one report is saying up to 7 climbers might be dead.
Sounds like main culprit was cerebral edema.
And one commenter offered this piece of brilliant advice regarding rescues above 25,000 ft:

Can anyone tell me what the wind is doing up there ? Might it be possible to launch a paraglider there ? The objective being to save life.
