Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
I don't like the constant friction that has resulted in the book readers v non-book readers discussion of the show and I don't enjoy the constant comparison of the two (this isn't happening at GRB, I think my fellow bookers have done a reasonably good job not spoiling or criticizing anything) but I'll just perpetuate that a little bit and say that it's been amusing to read reviews and have conversations about the show and hear what people think things are and mean or what characters they think are important. There are very few characters you can really get attached to and I'm kind of jealous that I'm not watching this great show with the same naivety.

I know about three or four people who have done both- the books and the TV show. They all seem really happy with the show.
I had to laugh last season when a ton of non-book people abandoned the show after "you know what" happened, that huge event towards the end of the season. They acted like the show had betrayed them or something. I thought they were dumb.

Over at a big ASOIAF forum I frequent, there's also a somewhat amusing conflict between longtime book fans who've been posting there for years and years, and newcomers who saw the first season, and read the books as a result. They often have some differing opinions, having seen the TV versions of their characters first, and generally don't have the somewhat-bitter elitist melancholy that we Martin nerds collectively suffer from.

Yes, but we have earned our bitter elitist melancholy. We waited half a freakin' decade for him to finish the last book while he worked on this TV show that's ruining everything.Maclowery wrote:Over at a big ASOIAF forum I frequent, there's also a somewhat amusing conflict between longtime book fans who've been posting there for years and years, and newcomers who saw the first season, and read the books as a result. (I don't feel that way, but I know many people who do. The only way I could be happier with the TV series is if it was 40 episodes a season instead of 10 and the episodes were available immediately and free online instead of making me wait a year -- I don't have HBO.)

I used to not be one of those malcontents, but that was because I discovered the book like a year and a half ago and by the time I finished Feast For Crows, Dance With Dragons was only like 5 months out. Now I'm long since up-to-date, and with the last two books having none of the blistering momentum of the first 3 and with Martin being aged and not exactly the picture of health and longevity, I am a little concerned we'll have to see the end of his vision through a relief writer and that would suck.Fat Strat wrote:Yes, but we have earned our bitter elitist melancholy. Yup. We'll see. I was disappointed with the pace of Dance With Dragons. I expected big movement and there really wasn't. I thought the same thing about Feast for Crows. Wasn't happy with it. Then went back and re-read it and thought it was much better the second time. Maybe I'll feel the same way about DwD.bob thrill wrote:I used to not be one of those malcontents, but that was because I discovered the book like a year and a half ago and by the time I finished Feast For Crows, Dance With Dragons was only like 5 months out. It seems like writers do this. They start out strong and then really stretch things out in the middle to milk as much money out of us fans as possible. You would have thought the industry would have learned their lesson with Robert Jordan.

I thought the same thing, but not up the butt...go birds wrote:Did anyone else (who hadn't already read the books) think that Joffrey was gonna make the one hooker shove that thing up the other hookers butt? I was cringing until she just whacked her in the ass with it.
My girlfriend was alarmed to find that I thought that is what was gonna happen. She called me a weird pervert and wouldn't speak to me the rest of the night.

These kinds of books lend themselves to Bitter Elitism. There are still LOTR fans out there who will go on a rant about Peter Jackson and Tom Bombadil. Personally, after reading all five books following the first season of the show, I think the show is doing an excellent job of distilling the books into a TV format. The books are good but they are super-long and there is a lot that could be cut--after a while I started to cringe whenever I got to a chapter from Bran's POV, and then I started skimming those chapters.

And I agree that "Veep" was excellent. Love the way everybody poops on poor Buster Bluth.
