Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
I survived watching two hours of the Killing for you people tonight. I took the bullet.
That is the most convoluted show in the history of TV. It's like the writers think if they just keep on writing they can somehow get themselves out of the ditch they've dug. But they keep getting deeper...and then they dig a bit more.
I'd like to give you some highlights, but why? Yes, Linden & her son are still homeless in Seattle. Yes, Holder is a dirty cop. Yes, they got the wrong guy. That's all stuff from season one...and it shows up in spades on the season 2 premiere. Plus, you get Linden scared of cop cars for some reason, but walks into the police station several times. Then she walks into the Sheriff's office and gives a fake name. Richmond is paralyzed, the Mayor's top guy is in on the cover up--OH, and so is the Lieutenant for some dumb reason. The guy that Holder was talking to in the car? The one that forged the pictures? It's literally some guy--someone brand new, no one's seen him before now. So, we don't even care who he is or why he's doing what he's doing. The fiancee? Not even mentioned ONCE in the show. Not once.
Pathetic. Just pathetic.
I could go on and on with this crap, but why? Why talk about a bloody backpack and having a father identify his daughter's panties? Why talk about a midnight crab fisherman who saved a suicidal mayoral candidate? Why talk about Belko blowing his head off in the police station so that they could just end that plot thread without having to bring him back again.
The Killing. Crap.

For those of you with starz, magic city looks to be good. Showed a preview of the first episode and it was pretty darn good. If it ends up sucking the eye candy may be worth it.

I'm barely hanging in by a thread.Cole Burns wrote:I survived watching two hours of the Killing for you people tonight. I took the bullet.

Honestly I don't remember much from last season and didn't get a chance to watch any of the first season again. They didn't really do a good job of bringing you back up to speed so we just sat there confused the whole time.
I really want it to be good but yea you kinda nailed it. It quickly reminding me why I stopped watching lost. Great concept, great beginning, poor execution. I'll continue to watch but by god I'm prolly not gonna like it.

The Killing sacrifices plot/writing but tries to plug the holes with good acting and paint-by-numbers cable drama direction and mood. It really feels like cynical people who don't get what makes shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men great trying to make Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
I am enjoying the new jewish guy they introduced last night. Seems compelling with the funny and the neurotic and the poverty filled back ground.

I totally see the Lost connection (though I hung on with Lost and loved it, actually - haters be denied). In fact, Damon Lindelof gave a defense of the Season Finale that was completely torn apart by ... (article has been taken down - try googling it). ANYWAY - the premise of Damon's defense is that we ask writers to do something different & when they do we complain. But the rebuttal pointed out (by comparing Lost to a hot chick & The Killing to a fat chick, both picked up at a bar) that The Killing blew the finale by presenting 6 straight episodes of crap leading up to it.
I couldn't shake the feeling that every actor on the show was thinking "What the crap are we doing this week? Shouldn't this be over by now?"

That's more or less how I feel, but I readily admit I'm hooked. 1) Once I've invested this much time in a whodunnit, I have to have closure. I'm pretty sure the show runners said explicitly after the finale that the Rosie Larsen murder would be solved in Season 2, so I'll be less forgiving this time around if it's not.
2) Brent Sexton is a hell of an actor.

Oh, I'm watching. I want closure too. It's just that there's those few times every show when a twist or red herring or magic bullet kind of thing happens when I just think, "Oh they're doing that because they think that's what they're supposed to do to be a great cable drama rather than doing what is actually logical or makes sense."
