Your friend's cat sounds neurotic from being bored. Probably not the suggestion she would like to hear but I would recommend getting another cat so the one she has has someone to play with while she's not there/trying to sleep.
FYI, permanent outdoor cats do not have a very long lifespan.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Not really any room for another cat though (budget wise apparently). Plus that doesn't solve the pawing or whatever it is that tears up the mattress and insulation. Plus she's a dog person and has a couple of those.
She took it in as a favor to a friend who works at a vets clinic and I think is trying to give it back now. It's still only a year old or so. Hope someone will take it. The cat is cute as hell but a real [expletive].

The cost of this cleaning?
$2000.
TWO THOUSAND MOTHER [expletive] DOLLARS. Apparently it requires anesthesia. They're thinking of seeking a different vet's opinion (which I encouraged). But his wife is all on board. If the cat needs a $2000 tooth cleaning, the cat gets a $2000 tooth cleaning. My friend, however, is decidedly more ambivalent about this decision.
Had to bump this because we just took one of our cats to the vet. She's been puking. We had blood work done to make sure her liver & kidney functions were OK; xrays taken to rule out a tumor or unknown substance, a shot to settle her stomach and were charged for an office visit & 2 cans of Science Diet bland cat food. Total came to $369. Someone is most definitely taking advantage if (s)he's charging $2000 for only teeth cleaning.
Cat seems to be fine now. I think she was chewing on a plant I need to get rid of.
I missed this, this should be some good readin' here. I'm not a cat person at all, they don't bother me or anything but other than to throw them I don't get the appeal. My next pet is going to be a jelly fish. I want a jelly fish aquarium. the jelly fish will pay about as much attention to me as a cat, but I think they are prettier. I can stare at them for long periods of time and it's very relaxing. I can't pet or throw them though.
