That's a tough one. For $2,000, you can have your cat's teeth cleaned. Or, you can pay a little more for a divorce lawyer and separate yourself from the person who wants to pay $2,000 to a cat dentist.

I knew a couple that had a young, chronically ill dog. They loved the dog and everything and tried everything to keep it alive. At the same time, they had just gotten married and were trying to save up for a house down payment. In the end, they kept the dog alive for an extra year or so (it was probably 4-5 when it died) and spent a lot of their savings (over 5K iirc).

That's just stupid, imo.

4 or 5 isn't very old so I can understand where they were coming from but I think I would have a hard time spending that much $$ on an animal that is chronically ill. I can't speak for your friends but that almost seems cruel and selfish to me.

Funny/almost dangerous story:

My cat snuck out the other morning when my wife went to let the dog out. He's been running outside lately without us being able to catch him, so I bought him a dog-tag with his name and my phone number on it and planned on letting him go outside more often since he seemed like he wanted to.

So the cat sneaks out and my wife can't find him before she has to go to work, I'm alreayd at work and figure i'll just find him when I get home. About half an hour before I get home I get a phonecall from someone telling me they've found my cat and taken him to a veterinarian animal hospital.

Apparently my cat crawled up into a car, the car started and took off with the cat still in it (i didn't get details so no idea where he was specifically). The woman drove 10 miles to U-City to do some shopping, then drove another 15 miles to Ritenour High School. When she gets to the high school she hears screaming coming from the hood of her car and asks a couple kids in the parking lot to look at what's there cause it's freaking her out. Kid opens up hood and there's my cat stuck under the engine. So they take him to the local vet hospital.

The cat's crazy lucky, no scratches or burns or anything. He was covered in white dust and had some hardend crusty white stuff in his nose, but otherwise was ok. And of course this little adventure did nothing to stem his curiousity about going outside, he ran out the next morning.

On topic: my line is about $1,000. More than that and I can't justify it. (My wife's Dog is her baby, and i'm betting if that animal needed something the line would be stretched a bit)

Especially an older animal. Why pay thousands of dollars to help an animal that will die in a few months/years anyway when you could adopt another kitten/puppy that would be put down due to overpopulation otherwise? (And I have that logic for myself, too, if i'm a really old man and need medical help costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to my family in order to extend my life a minuscule amount....pull the plug)
