Just watched Gervais' Golden Globes monologue. Kind of sucked.
Speaking of SOPA, has anyone watched 'Life's too Short' yet?

The premiere of Justified gives me good feelings about Season 3. Looks even better than last year.

Also, after having dropped Homeland after episode 7, I decided to watch the rest and it redeemed itself pretty well. I realize that part of my problem, especially early in the season, was there's kind of a theater vibe about it. Most of the scenes are between a few people in a handful of rooms and sets you become very familiar with. Something felt cheap and spare about it which undercut the large stage these characters are operating on. They might well have had budget issues that prevented a more expansive feel. Having said that, it's not 24, and it's more emotionally heavy than that show was. There's also some significant plot holes to overlook, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it picks things up next season.

If you watch Downton Abbey and are on twitter, follow Patton Oswalt. Not just because his live tweets of Downton Abbey are the best things on twitter, but also because he's Patton Oswalt.

I just downloaded the first episode of Downton Abbey, but Colby Lewis is about to get doubled up in the top of the 2nd inning. My big decision of the day is whether to pause the game and see if I like this new show or wait 2.5 hours.

Being on vacation has given me time to develop a couple of guilty pleasure TV-viewing habits.

Gold Rush is a terrible show with terrible people. I am pretty much watching this hoping to see them starve in the Alaskan wilderness. The main guy is a huge fat idiot with an ugly beard who says some variant of "frick" every 30 seconds. He's pursuing a stupid dream of making it rich mining gold because he gave up on the U.S. economy. I'm pretty sure he gave up the day a black Muslim socialist was inaugurated president, but maybe he deserves the benefit of the doubt and he's a good old-fashioned anti-federalist gold standard nutjob. I'm pretty sure the mechanic is a narcotic abuser, and the other guys pretty much just stand around and let themselves be bullied by the main guy. The real selling point is that they don't have a clue what they are doing, meaning they're working long, hard hours for a fraction of minimum wage. In fact, they apparently lost money they didn't have in the first season. Of course Discovery is along and paying them some amount to keep them from actually starving, but it's still amusing to watch them fumble their way through most of the season for the sake of a dream that should have died out in the 19th century.

On the advice of a friend I caught one episode of Caged, a new show on MTV. In a small Louisiana town, seemingly every male in their early 20s has decided that they are now professional mixed martial artists, and MTV is along to dramatize their delusions. I don't like MMA, and I definitely don't like MTV programming, but it was still pretty amusing. You take one look at these guys, one of whom is actually pretty damned chubby and none of whom are built like professional fighters, and you figure they must have started training the week before MTV's cameras rolled into town. Then it gets to the fight footage and you realize, no, they don't even have that much training. It's like watching a high school fight except their mothers are there cheering them on (But then again maybe that's what a high school fight is like in Louisiana). I doubt I'll ever watch it again because that would necessitate effort to find when it airs or else flipping past MTV occasionally, but it surpasses Gold Rush in showing unlikeable people failing at their pipe dreams.

Most of my TV-watching habits are not built so firmly around schadenfreude, but I'll take what I can get when I'm just lounging around the house all day.

Watched the first couple episodes of Grimm on Hulu Plus last night. Intriguing idea, incredibly dull show. Might give "Once Upon a Time" a whirl tonight.

I watched the first episode of Life's Too Short and was a little disappointed. It's Willow doing an impression of the child of David Brent and Andy Millman, and then celebrities acting just like they did in Extras.

But there is some promise there, and apparently an episode with Johnny Depp. So I've not given up yet.

Does anyone have trouble accessing cuevana.tv?

I get a "403 Forbidden" message when I try.
