Swirls wrote:We had to put my family cat down over the Christmas holiday. He was 17 years old and on his last legs anyway (or his 9th life I suppose, if you think about it that way), so it wasn't completely unexpected. He ended up developing an extremely aggressive and fast growing tumor that attached itself to his jaw (my parents had taken him in to the vet a few weeks ago to have a cyst on his jaw drained, and the tumor wasn't there at that point). The only solution would be to do surgery and remove his jaw to pull out the tumor, then reattach it. Not only would this be incredibly painful for him for several months until his jaw healed fully, but it would require us to feed him through a tube until his jaw was healed enough so that he could chew food. Plus there's no guarantee he'd even survive the surgery. So we elected to do the humane thing and euthanize him. RIP Fred, you'll be missed.
My parents just put their dog down this week. With no kids in the house, they really gave that dog attention. He was about 13 years old. They are a mess. He had cancer and a tumor on his stomach that would bleed really badly. For almost a year they kept a diaper wrapped around his torso - he had two surgeries to remove it.

As long as he seemed like himself, they would change the diaper, carry him, treat him like an infant. But the last month he stopped eating, panted all the time, wouldn't jump up to sleep on their bed anymore...

it was really nice of the vet place. my parents wanted to have it done outside and the vet place met them at a park where they could sit on benches under trees and each hold on to their dog. the vet place gave them a paw print and snipped some fur.

All of this is sad but my dog is older than theirs and my sisters dog is dead, also younger than my dog. I got my dog in the NINETIES. 1999. And she is still a puppy. Wants to play ball every second of every day. You would never know how old she is, except her eyes are starting to get that cloudy glaucoma look. her fur still looks puppy-ish and she has boundless energy and she can (and always has) outrun me. She has crossed the country with me more than twice.

I can't imagine losing her.

Asking a favor from my GRB peeps that only takes a few seconds. Please vote for cat rescue org, Tenth Life! They could receive $5-10k! You can vote once a day until voting ends on the 29th. They're in 9th place now.

LOL

This weekend TL rescued a kitty found duct taped to a tree in the woods and left for dead by neighborhood kids.

I gave the cat savers a vote for ya.

I don't know what to make of an internet poll to determine donees. Looks like they have 100+ places vieing for awards.

But then again, I don't know what an alternative method would be.
