Haha, thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Still not holding my breath that they'll do anything about it though. They seem more interested in telling customers why they're wrong than in listening to them.

I also wrote another email to the customer service guy who replied to my original letter, trying to refine my case. Hopefully he'll write back.

United's policy is that check-in be completed at least 60 minutes before departure. Just tell them you were at the check-in counter 60 minutes before departure but they weren't. Don't even bother with the other explanations about immigration or whatever, just tell them they closed the counter before they were supposed to. I guess if they don't keep records of when they shut down a counter, it's your word against theirs, but really it's a very cut and dry argument.

That's the case I'm trying to make. I mention the other stuff to show that I was at the airport well ahead of time anyway and had already spoken to United employees.

In the customer service response I got the guy told me they close some desks 90 minutes before departure. That seems to be what happened to me. However, nowhere in writing have I been able to find that. Everything I've seen says at Buenos Aires it's 60 minutes.

It's basically my word against theirs.

That will be the next step in the offensive I guess. I'll have to create a Twitter account first though.

According to maddash's link there, the explicit written policy at EZE is that it is 60 minutes before departure and not 90 minutes, so it's not really your word against theirs unless they are going to claim you are lying about when you got to the desk. It kind of baffles me that they are so unwilling to be accommodating here. I've mostly had good luck with this kind of thing in the past. Airlines often at minimum offer you some kind of ticket voucher for far more dubious complaints. Got to escalate this thing further somehow.

I'm sure doc will happily sabotage United's twitter feed for you.

Not that this helps, but I talked to my brother about this and he suggested that what you could have done is just buy a refundable ticket to wherever to get through security. Once you do that, you could try and round up a United employee who could help you and then just had the other ticket cancelled.

Possibly an option, if there had been a United employee to sell me a ticket. There wasn't a single one to be found anywhere on my side of security.

No, just any old ticket to anywhere from another airline. You just need something to get through security, so you could talk to the United employees staffing the gate.
