I'm drinking the Kool aid on Sons of Anarchy. It's still over the top, but much better than The Shield which I'm now certain is it's closest TV relative. The acting is so good it totally overwhelms some of the thinner plots. There's a [expletive] load that just doesn't make sense, but I dont really care.

it's the highest rated show on FX for a reason (and FX has/had some great shows...the shield, rescue me, justified, nip/tuck)

i think it's great BECAUSE it's over the top....i don't want to watch a realistic TV show....that'd be like watching....life. prob most days of a real outlaw motorcycle club involves them sitting around getting drunk and watching tv....same [expletive] as everyone else.

That was a GREAT BB episode. Probably a redundant announcement at this point.

Lots of moments of transcendent TV that you realized was transcendent as you were watching it.
[SHOW]
Walt breaking down regretting his fight with Jesse, Skylar telling Beneke too much (that guy needs to get got) and Gus wiping EVERYONE in the cartel out.

Watched the S1 finale last night. Holy [expletive], was that good. Probably the best finale I've seen in years. A little manipulative maybe, but I can live with it.

As far as being over the top, I think it's already gotten better over the season. But I think you've got to be careful with that. The problem I had with the Shield was Vic's ridiculous ability to get out of jams and be 2 steps ahead of every one. A few times a season I could accept, but it was like that seemingly every episode. Dexter has a similar problem on that score. From what i've read, Season 2 is even more scaled back so I'm looking forward to that.

One of those "if you aren't listening, you might miss it" moments from last night:
[SHOW]
Walt called Walter Jr. "Jesse" as he went back to bed.

So much stuff came full circle.

-the flashback to Gus' friend getting popped in the skull, falling in the pool, earlier this season. Then Don Eladio last night.

-Jesse driving Mike's car away from danger in the earlier season (when Gus wanted him to be a hero). Then doing the same last night.

-Jesse standing there, dumbfounded and not knowing what to do with enemy fire a few episodes back... this time, knowing what to do and blowing that one guy away.
It's so damned economical. There's no wasted effort.

Oh, there's real motorcycle clubs like this. Just a few months ago, there was a huge multi city motorcycle club sting. It was big in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and I think Oakland(near SOA's fictional charming). Check it out. I remember reading it and thinking, wow, this is real life SOA. The charges included murder, racketeering, drugs, assault, and guns. I want to say like 50 people were busted.

One other thing about SOA - I like how much California is a part of the show. I'm not from there, and haven't spent a lot of time there, but most shows and movies portray California as looking like pretty much every place else. That's partly because they're usually focused on LA, which is like a big strip mall and it often substitutes for other places. Having traveled and driven through there a couple times now, I remember thinking how odd it was that you never see the rest of the state the way I saw it. The farmland for instance - I first went when I was 20 and I had no idea all that was there. The two best representations I've seen of all the things I saw are GTA:San Andreas and now SOA. Watching SOA has actually reminded me a lot of playing GTA.

But even then those bikers aren't having shoot outs on a daily basis.
