It's changed over the years and is different from place to place. When I was playing in my area it was the only "travel" or "showcase" team there really was. Now of course there are so many of these, plus where I live there are high school summer teams which are required by most coaches by all but the very elite. Legion ball up here is really an 18 year old team - guys that graduated HS that don't have that commitment to play on their HS summer team.

It's kind of a Norman Rockwell type thing - it's the original summer league team. But like all things like that change has come.

Isn't American League basically what High School baseball players play in the summer when school is out? If so I would rather just go to their high school games.

Not around Chicago. Around here there is an IHSA summer league that plays Mon-Thurs. It's basically a developmental league for HS.

BTW - 1979 District tourney for American Legion I played in (we won the tourney) when I was 16 had 5 teams in it, 4 of them had future MLB'ers:
Dick Schofield (Springfield)
Kevin Seitzer (Lincoln)
Pat Perry (Taylorville)
Jeff Innis (Decatur)

Pretty damn impressive group of 5 amateur teams.

Don't get me wrong if I knew a game was going on close by to me and I had nothing better to do that night I would probably go to the game and have a good time. Just not something I would get all into like knowing all the players on the teams and what not. It's kind of like going to a Gateway Grizzlies game.
