Agreed. And Gabbert being a top 10 pick really emphasizes that selling point.

Between Franklin, Berkstresser, and Kiel, there's going to be a heck of a battle for the starting job in 2012-2013 (though I assume Mauk wouldn't start as a true freshman).

FWIW, Maty is the brother of Ben Mauk, who played at Cincy and Wake Forest.

There seems to be some sentiment among a few of those that follow Mizzou football recruiting closely that Mauk is a better fit for the Mizzou offense than Kiel. I don't know if I buy it since both play in the spread but I hope they're right because I agree, it looks like the Kiel ship has sailed.

I could buy the concept- that Mauk is a better fit- but I'm pretty sure I'd rather take the guy with more talent. Don't get me wrong- I'm thrilled with Mauk. And as you say, the Kiel ship has (or had) already sailed. I don't think it was an either/or scenario so much as it was "You can have Mauk, or you can hold out for a lottery ticket on Kiel". My understanding is that it's down to Alabama, Oklahoma, and Indiana for Kiel, with Indiana in the lead because it's close to home and family. As much as Mizzou's QB rep is a real thing, and as much as the program has advanced, it's hard to imagine an out of state kid picking Mizzou over OU or Alabama.

Mizzou had a good week for linemen. Today, they picked up a commitment from Evan Winston, who's listed as the 16th best prospect in Michigan on Rivals. What's weird is that they have him listed as a DE, but other sources have him as a DT. DE makes more sense. His next two schools were Cincinnati and Iowa.

And then earlier this week, they got Simon Goines (3 star offensive tackle from Texas). More importantly, they also got the #33 prospect in Texas (and #23 at his position), DT Donald Hopkins.

Between Evan Boehm, Maty Mauk, Hopkins, and Jonathan Williams, Pinkel has put together a really good recruiting class. And it would appear that they're becoming something of a destination school for D-linemen.
