By the way, I wasn't trying to come off as pretentious or condescending. If I go out to Vegas I would undoubtedly act like an idiot. It's just, I'm sure the novelty wears off really fast for people that live there (if they have exposure to them).

One of my wife's old friends from North Dakota decided that after living in Grand Forks her entire life decided that she was going to move to Vegas and rent an apartment on the strip (towards the north end but still in a nice area, just down from the Wynn). The place was close to 3K a month to rent & was about 3,000 sq ft. The place was amazing. She moved there w/ her boyfriend and proceeded to blow through 40k in CASH gambling so who knows how much credit they racked up.

It's safe to say Vegas is not for everyone.

Re: Where to stay.

I'd say the Flamingo just because of it's location. But really, the cheapest place within half a mile of Flamingo/Las Vegas Blvd would be my suggestion. It really doesn't matter.

The only reason it does is for 1. pools and 2. you don't want to walk around in a concrete jungle too much in the summer because it is hot as [expletive] and you're drunk as [expletive]/hungover as [expletive] (probably drunk)

Your signature is incredibly unfair. The typical spelling and grammar on this site is excellent... though the sentiment expressed is a fairly accurate representation.

Pit bosses don't have any authority to give stuff away on their own just because they like you. It's all figured by computers.
And guess whose job it is to put the gambling data into the computers? ;)

Seriously, though, the above statement is correct - the corporations took away the pit bosses' autonomy some years ago; they're not even called "pit bosses" any more; they are "game supervisors" or "floormen". They do have a little leeway - if a guy is betting nicely but hasn't quite earned enough comps to go get dinner, say, at Gallagher's Steakhouse, they can have the pit clerks (that's my department) issue a comp slip for a little bit over what they've earned; they try not to go more than 20-30 bucks over, though - just in case the guy doesn't come back.

Where you see large "deficits" is in the case of guests who have been comped rooms; those are by invitation to regular and good players and most of them will erase that deficit by the time they finish their stay. If they don't, they don't get invited any more. It's extremely difficult for a regular player to get a comped room; someone who's been betting big might get one (these have to be issued by a host; the floorman doesn't have that much authority) but of course we have to have rooms available.

Don't even get me started on markers. ;)

I'm at NYNY now; have also worked at Excalibur, Encore, Flamingo, and Palace Station. Recently promoted to lead so I'm supervising the clerks on swing shift. Live about 10 miles from work up in Summerlin.

I actually enjoy the work very much; the crew I work with is a good one and the atmosphere at NYNY is fairly relaxed; there's little of the old caste-system in place; I can talk as easily with a pit boss as I can with a dealer or a waitress; in some places (Bellagio, for example), the clerks aren't supposed to talk to *anybody*.

As for our feeling about tourists - it's not so much the tourists themselves as the "touristy" behavior; I get a little tired of the frat boys and screaming women trying to re-enact "Vegas Bachelor Party" or "Hangover" all in one night; there are few more disgusting sights than a cute chick in a short dress and six-inch heels puking behind the craps pit and then ordering another drink.

And I'll never understand the parents dragging their three-year-old kids through the casino at 3 in the morning.

I really like the inside of NYNY, it's a cool casino with a good vibe. It's a shame they are slowly de-NYNYing it. I understand why the casinos are removing the themes (the Vegas as a family destination idea bombed), but it still sucks. I'm glad that they still have the roller-coaster which is surprisingly good.

Maybe I'll stop by this weekend to pick-up my free steak dinner, Mode (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Just kidding on the steak thing.

Daddy needs a new pair of shoes?

Seriously, though, that's sick.

Heeey, New York New York is where I stayed and did most of my gambling in February. Now I'm wondering if I crossed paths with JMo.

I might be in the minority here, but I hated NYNY. There were too many kids running around and I found that to be extremely annoying. Plus, while I was there they were doing construction everywhere--something that they failed to mention while we were booking.

The price, however, was reasonable. I did enjoy 9 Fine Irishmen though. Good bar!
