Has anyone's reputation in sports deteriorated as quickly as Lebron's? He went from one of the most likable players in sports to one of the biggest villains in just one year. His post game comments are the icing on the cake. It's pretty amazing when you think about it.

I think a lot of people hated him (probably because he's been expected to be an all time great and Jordanesque since he was 18, and you're not allowed to compare anyone to Jordan unless you're trying to show how awesome Jordan was)but had no real reason to. The Decision gave them a tangible reason.

Personally I think it's because he came off like a massive douche. It's a much simpler explanation than extremely latent Lebron hate because of the Jordan comparisons.

The kid was labeled a choker after his first trip to the NBA Finals. Since he stepped foot on an NBA court it's always been "...yeah, but, Jordan was better." People were lined up ready to hate on LeBron no matter who he went to. If he stays in Cleveland it's because he's selfish and has to be "the man" and have fun being Kevin Garnett. He goes to Miami and he's a total dick to Cleveland and is admitting he can't "be the man." He goes to Chicago and he's trying to best MJ. The Decision was douchey, but his actual decision was going to be hated on no matter what he did. He's just one of those guys that people love to hate because he was so hyped.

I think anytime an MVP or best player in the sport gets to a championship and fails, there are immediately going to be questions of whether they have what it takes to win it all. In any sport. When that player falls short year after year, it eventually becomes the mindset of everyone. I don't know if anyone remembers or not but there were actually similar accusations about Jordan for most of the first half of his career. They were knocked out in the first round his first three years and failed to make it to the championship series his next three years as well. But I also think it's senseless to try and rationalize love and hate of sports fans. No one needs an excuse to root for or against anyone. He's the biggest name in the game. His face is everywhere and a lot of people love to see him fall.

Lebron was never hated in Cleveland, and him staying there would not have changed that.

Some fans are disappointed in him for leaving in his prime. Some hate the way he left. Some now hate him because of his attitude / quotes.

He needs better people around him. But he really doesn't seem to care what people think, by not being more humble in interviews he is by default embracing the villain image.
