A key senator has asked the Social Security Administration to investigate how people who live their lives role-playing as "adult babies" are able to get taxpayer-funded disability payments - after one of them was featured on a recent reality TV episode wearing diapers, feeding from a bottle and using an adult-sized crib he built.
Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican and the Senate's top waste-watcher, asked the agency's inspector general to look into 30-year-old Stanley Thornton Jr. and his roommate, Sandra Dias, who acts as his "mother," saying it's not clear why they are collecting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits instead of working.
"Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time," Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O'Carroll Jr.
But if you read further in the article, the guy states that he'll kill himself if they take away his benefits, and "how damn serious I am about leaving this world" and it mentions how he wasn't able to hold down a job as a security guard due to childhood trauma and abuse. Clearly, the guy needs serious help.
And it's a very slippery slope if we start doling out ssi benefits to someone who likely has a mental disorder but appears able to function and work (just not in a high-stress role such as a security guard). Yes the man needs help, but taxpayers probably shouldn't be paying for his, um, projects. We can argue about whether they should be paying for his treatment or hospital bills, but not this.

Aren't we enablers for paying for him to slip deeper into his unhealthy mental state? I agree, he needs help, but paying him to live this way isn't doing anybody any good.Cronos69 wrote:When I just saw the clip, I originally thought: "Well...that's a little weird, but whatever gets you off I guess. I definitely agree. We can't let people basically hold the gov't hostage by threatening to kill themselves if they take away their welfare. If it's determined by someone qualified that he needs psychiatric treatment, then pay for that and get him the help he needs. Don't pay to allow him to live in a state of permanent regression and complete avoidance of reality.cards2468 wrote:Aren't we enablers for paying for him to slip deeper into his unhealthy mental state? If they could not pay anyone like this, wouldn't that mean a lot of Cubs fans would need to get jobs?Cronos69 wrote:I definitely agree. Kyle Pearce, United Airlines Passenger, Single-Handedly Joins Mile High Club, Is Arrested
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -seat.htmlKyle Pearce of Florida was flying from Spokane to Denver on May 19, when he shocked fellow passengers by masturbating in his coach-class United Airlines seat, according to an FBI affidavit filed in Denver on May 20, The Smoking Gun reports.
He was, not surprisingly, arrested when United flight 340 touched down in Denver. Pearce was charged with "obscene and indecent exposure of his person by exhibiting his penis and masturbating in plain view."
Tucked into seat 18D, Pearce allegedly started masturbating before he was caught in the act by his fellow passengers, according to paperwork filed by Special Agent Martin Daniell, III, an 11-year FBI veteran.
A passenger seated in 19D right behind Pearce told police "I hit him with my book in the arm, which caused him to stop and leave to the bathroom."
A woman unlucky enough to be seated next to Pearce in 18E told cops he was masturbating and that he, "ejaculated and got some on the seat."
After he ducked into the lavatory, passengers wondered aloud if Pearce was "stoned on marijuana," say court papers posted to The Smoking Gun.
For his in-flight masturbatory shenanigans, Pearce faces a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail with a year of supervised release and a fine of up to $5,000.

In it, an 18-year-old female passenger sitting next to Pearce on the plane revealed her revulsion when she glanced over at him - and saw more than she ever would have wanted to see.
'I heard a noise and looked over and saw his penis,' the woman was quoted as saying in the criminal complaint.
'He ejaculated and got some on the seat. Then he went to the bathroom for a long time.'

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police say an Alum Creek man high on bath salts killed his neighbor's pygmy goat and that neighbors found him in his bedroom, dressed in a bra and panties, next to the dead animal, said Lt. Bryan Stover of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.
