Re: The Beer Thread

I was visiting my folks this weekend and stocked up on some Schlafly. Sixes of:

- Wheat
- Pilsner
- Pale Ale
- Kolsch.

Looking forward to them.

Also, I have to make a comment on this idea that beer tastes totally different depending on where you are. I developed a real taste for Guinness when I was in Ireland, and last night I decided to go to an Irish place near our house last night. I had two pints, and .... tasted the same to me. Exactly the same. There is no difference that I can tell between the Guinness that I drank at the brewery in Dublin and the one I had last night. And on the flip side, i had one Budweiser when I was in Ireland and it tasted the same as it did in the states.

I suppose there is a higher chance that it's not as fresh, but I'm not sure it's a guarantee that it's going to taste different.

Ah, crap. You missed out on the Schlafly Bavarian-Style Weissbier. It just hit shelves a few weeks ago. It's nothing special, per se. It's just a really simple brew, done really well. It might be my new favorite Schlafly product.

Next time down ... I'm a big fan of this brewer. The beers are done well, but nothing goofy about them. I'm not a fan of the really oddball stuff.

their Koelsch is crap, and I'm not too big of a fan of their different pale ales, but they do make some tasty brews, and ever since I saw Beer Wars, Schlafley has been my go-to beer company
I really miss the 15 they brewed last year for their anniversary.

The Kolsch is good for the style. Maybe you just don't like Kolsch.

I've likely said this before in this thread, but what I appreciate about Schlafly is that they are usually very close to hitting style guidelines. When they stray, it is usually pretty good when they keep it around (see Coffee Stout and Pumpkin Ale).

That said, it makes you rarely want to buy a standard brew if they are merely landing on target with a style (I never buy a 6'er of most Schlafly beers, outside of the special beers listed above). But in a world where brewpubs and breweries consistenly swing and miss on beer styles, I do appreciate it.

Schlafly Hefeweizen is one of my favorite beers.

I can't wait to try the new one JLFancy69er mentioned.

Walgreens has some beer that is 2.99 a 6 pack. I'm excited to find out how terrible it is.

I love a real Koelsch

This is my baseline:

I don't really like American brewers naming a beer a Koelsch since they obviously don't come from Koeln, but the Schlafly Koelsch is way too bitter and over hopped compared to Reissdorf.

EDIT* Fat Bulldog - I also like their Heffeweizen. It's kinda weak, but it's tasty and relatively low in calories (125 calories for a bottle)

It's exactly why I want to buy them. I can't stand all of this experimenting. Mostly it just tastes bad and makes me go back to drinking something not great but consistent like Budweiser for months at a time.
