Re: Mizzou 2010 Hoops
The anology is that Painter is currently at where he wants to be. Money and more respect may make him want to stray, but it won't change what he really wants--to win at his alma mater. The team he's not only coached for, but played for.
When you get a guy only because you gave him more money, you have to be cautious about how much his heart is really in it now.
Mizzou needs to hire a guy where Mizzou is going to be his dream job. That's how you build a stable, successful program over the long term. Painter may have been the sexy hire, but I don't think it would be the best hire.

Yeah, I'm not buying that at all. You don't get to where Matt Painter is by mailing it in. Coaches are fanatical for their devotion to their craft and I doubt that the name on the front of the jersey has anything at all to do with effort.
As for someone who views Mizzou as a "dream job", that guy doesn't exist beyond Kim Anderson. So I guess Kim Wnderson would've been a better hire than Matt Painter.

I guess I'm just of the opinion that most (all?) schools with great coaches didn't poach them from a similar program by waving more money. About the only lateral move like that which has worked out is maybe Roy Williams, but that was going *to* his dream job, not *from* his dream job.
Mizzou played the part of the mistress here. I personally think it is better for them that it didn't work out, but I'm not a Mizzou fan.

Ben Howland was poached from Pitt, Calipari was poached from Memphis, Bob Huggins at K-State going to West Virginia, just off the top of my head.

I'm having a hard time believing that Painter was going to mail it in at Mizzou had he taken the job.

UCLA and Kentucky are in a different class than Pitt and Memphis. Those aren't lateral moves--they're promotions.
Huggins moved laterally--*to* his alma mater, not *from* it.
You may have a hard time believing he would "mail it in". I'm not even saying that he would. But the lure of money is fleeting. Beware the employee you were able to hire only because you paid him more. His heart may not be in it.

Painter's main motivation for leaving Purdue was not money.

So you're saying that he was motivated by money AND other things, but still didn't want the Missouri job?Transmogrified Tiger wrote:Painter's main motivation for leaving Purdue was not money.

That's a remarkably poor trolling effort from you.Socnorb11 wrote:So you're saying that he was motivated by money AND other things, but still didn't want the Missouri job?Transmogrified Tiger wrote:Painter's main motivation for leaving Purdue was not money.
