Calling Mizzou vs. Purdue a lateral move is being kinda generous to Mizzou. As a reminder, Purdue has the most Big Ten championships in b'ball. More than IU, more than Ohio State, more than anyone. In a sense, they are the Blues of college b'ball--all sorts of history and regular season success, zero championships to show for it.

Not that Mizzou is chopped liver. They're just not quite at Purdue's level. They are a b'ball school in a b'ball state. The only reason why Painter would leave was over disrespect. Frankly, that's not a good thing for Mizzou even if they got him. They would be the revenge [expletive]. The trophy wife you marry when your ex-wife that you loved treated you like crap. Mizzou wouldn't have been his dream job. He *has* his dream school, just not the respect there he deserves.

Sounds like MSU hired Painter's top assistant Paul Lusk. I figured it was him when Lusk wasn't at Painter's press conference and MSU's AD postponed his trip to Final Four for a day.

JL, it shouldn't piss off MSU fans to say they aren't competing for same players, because they aren't. Granted, over the past decade, probably half the time MSU was a better team on the court, but with Mizzou's conference affiliation and the resources from that, they're clearly on another level as a program and as a job.

Same thing for SLU (other than the on-court part).

I think you and a lot of other people are assuming it's cut and dried what makes a CBB job a good one. I'm not assuming I know the answer but I bet it has something to do with facilities, recruitability, history, financial backing, et al.

It should be noted that both Anderson and Painter chose other options.

That's already been overly noted.

Thanks for the update.

Both of those coaches had very strong reasons to choose those options. Attempting to characterize it as a negative for Mizzou is silly. If anything, It's a compliment to Mizzou that both of them reportedly struggled with the decision before going with the choice everyone already expected.

Mizzou has a lot deeper pockets than most outsiders realize. I honestly think it's a top 20 job that can compete for titles with the right coach, and I tend to be as critical as any of the Tiger fans on the board. We're excited because they've shown the willingness to spend what it takes to get a top coach, but not many of the realistic options left really fit that criteria.

Noted. Painter also gave MU serious thought, apparently.

Is Arkansas a better job than Purdue? =? worse?

I'm no idiot. If nobody good wants the Mizzou job then it's obviously not a great job.

When I move to Indianapolis, one of the things that surprised me was the number of Purdue fans. They're as dedicated as IU fans, they pretty much own the northern half of Indiana, and they're especially proud of the "winning record against every team in the Big Ten" thing as well as the most Big Ten championships in men's basketball. It's a big-ass state school about 60 miles from Indianapolis and 125 miles from Chicago, and it's got a good science/engineering program. I don't know that they have a Phil Knight-type dumping enormous piles of cash on them, building various palaces for amateur athletics, but I'd be shocked if more than a handful of schools could outbid them for their coach.

I was speaking strictly in terms of prestige, not about facilities. I thought that's what we meant when talking of lateral moves. Obviously facilities, salaries, current talent, etc. are different variables. Variables that schools have a little more control over than history.

But back to the latter part of my statement--does Mizzou really want to bring in a coach who's leaving his dream position only because of a lack of respect/money? Do you want to date a hot chick who just got divorced from a man she still loves because he cheated on her?

I guess I don't understand the analogy, but yes- Mizzou really does and should want to hire Matt Painter, regardless of why he's leaving. It seems ridiculous that anyone would say no to that question.
