I think Mooney just signed an extension with Richmond earlier this week.

The report said Mooney's extension wouldn't be an obstacle, his buyout is like 750k.

Do you really think that Painter takes them to that level?
Painter has accomplished just as much as Bill Self did before he went to KU. He's proven he can coach and would be a much better recruiter than CMA. Mizzou has some of the best facilities in the country. Most importantly, the MU administration seems to be committed to elevating the program to a higher profile. I really think he would have been a great fit.
Bill Self took over a program that had gone to the Final Four the previous two years.........one of the elite programs in the country. While I think he's a good coach, I think that his situation is significantly different than the situation that Painter would step into.

I think Painter is a good coach. But he hasn't been able to win the Big Ten (a conference that doesn't have a perennial power like Kansas).
He won both the regular season conference and the conference tourney once each the last 2 years.
He's a 3 time Big Ten Coach of the Year in 5 seasons. The dude can coach. He was the grand slam candidate. Brad Stevens is the only coach being mentioned that can even hold a candle to Painter. And that's even more unlikely to happen. Smart, Jacobsen, etc. don't have half the ability or resume Painter brought to the table.

Looking at it from my perspective (a non-Mizzou fan...but I'm working on it)...Is it really that shocking that Painter wasn't going to leave Purdue? He's an alumni, and it's Indiana basketball. Why would he leave...especially when IU has been in the basement for awhile? I'm sure he could recruit from the whole state if he wanted.

Maybe I'm missing something, but is going from Purdue to Mizzou a higher step on the ladder? I don't really know.

From what I've heard, the top 3 Indiana players this year, and next, are commited to Indiana. Apparently(and smartly) Crean has locked down the Hoosier state for the Hoosiers.

And, whether there's truth to it or not, supposedly Painter and the AD didn't have the best working relationship. His assistants weren't making enough. And the standards for being admitted were a little tougher than what an MU would have.

And it's not just Indiana as the main threat in terms of recruiting. Notre Dame was a force this year, and that could help their recruiting a bit. And then there's also this little school named Butler who may have a rise in recruiting based on some okay play the last couple of years.

At least in Missouri, there's no other true threats in state.

This all makes sense...I'm just not very educated in this area, and haven't been following it too closely.

Another quick question, wouldn't Painter have to deal with trying to recruit with Kansas, Illinois, and now Arkansas all competing for midwest recruits? It seems like Missouri is getting surrounded.

It's mostly a lateral move as far as program strength. But it wasn't about that. It was about stuff like his assistants leaving because they weren't getting paid enough. Or not getting reimbursed for recruiting trips. Or his being very underpaid relative to Big Ten coaches (and NCAA coaches overall). He could've had a comparable program while losing a lot of those headaches, and would've gotten a sizable pay bump for the right, if he'd come to Mizzou.

As for recruiting, Mizzou doesn't really have any peers in the state, which is probably going to piss off the SLU and MSU fans. But it's true- Mizzou is a major conference team who has developed into a perennial top 25-ish squad. No matter what you think of SLU and MSU, they aren't really competing for the same players. In Indiana, he doesn't just have to deal with Indiana. He also has to contend with Butler (two straight Final Fours) and Notre Dame (2 seed this year, could've been a 1 seed). Throw in the two major metro areas (KC and St. Louis) and that STL has been mostly untapped by Mizzou... you get the point.

None of that is to say that anyone should assume Painter would've come here at all. So in that sense, no- it's not shocking. Where it becomes shocking and horribly disappointing is in how close Painter came to choosing Mizzou, to the point that a reputable reporter for a notable newspaper put his balls on the line announcing that Painter had chosen Mizzou.

So I don't really fault Matt Painter for this- the guy did what he thought was right- but creating this pic of him with devil horns and eating a baby made me feel infinitely better.
