As a potential coach is the current roster that big a factor in your decision? And Slaten was talking bringing in Larry Drew so that you could get his kid. Now I know Slaten is an idiot but I wonder if anyone really makes a $10 million (ish) dollar commitment based on something like that. Also LD2 isn't all that good anyway.

The current roster is definitely a factor. As much as coaches are getting paid now, fans are demanding results within 3-4 years. Unless you are a big name coach or a big name program it might take a few years to start landing top recruits. Unfortunately, Mizzou's roster isn't all that appealing to a coach that runs a traditional style. Pressey, Denmon and Bowers are legit but the rest of the guys will struggle in a slower paced style. However, a coach that is confident in his recruiting abilities could completely remake the roster within two years due to all of the upperclassmen.

Do you really think that Painter takes them to that level?
Painter has accomplished just as much as Bill Self did before he went to KU. He's proven he can coach and would be a much better recruiter than CMA. Mizzou has some of the best facilities in the country. Most importantly, the MU administration seems to be committed to elevating the program to a higher profile. I really think he would have been a great fit.

You think? Mizzou's arena isn't any nicer than the Q in Springfield, and I wouldn't call that one of the nicest places in the country (though both are nice).

As for Grant, that's a lot of jack, so if he truly makes that much money, he'd be a hard pull. If I was going after a coach, and I was one of the top-40 or so jobs in the country, I'd be going after Grant above anyone not named Brad Stevens. I think Mizzou is a top-40 job.

Honestly, either of the NIT coaches would seem to be decent Plan Bs. I have nothing against Jacobson, but I like Grant and Marshall better.

Unequivocally, Jacobsen is a better coach than Marshall. It really isn't close.

Wow...props to Bernie man...usually he bails and fails to take blame...he took it like a man...gained a lot of respect for him!!

As to bosses not being happy with him...I would think him acting like he did nothing wrong would be worse

He's owning it.
That's pretty [expletive] awesome. Good for him.
Yes, very impressive. No credibility repair needed from my standpoint.
I give the guy big credit for owning it, I really do.

However, I've been talking Purdue fans off the ledge all day for this reason. It seems sometimes he goes a little too full-steam. Why headline with "Expected To Accept Position" and then start the article with "It's not officlal". Why not say 'leaning' that way? Intrigued? Increasingly Likely?

Anyways, I saw around 1pm today (saw BM article at 11am eastern) that MU's official stance is his report was premature. I didn't see anyone else with sources saying it was anywhere near a done deal...so Bernie was a little irresponsible with this.

Not sure how I feel about this characterization. We don't know how much Painter got from Purdue, but more importantly I'm sure it had more to do with his ability and his assistants ability to recruit than anything. We have no idea of knowing what Painter told MU that got to Bernie's source. Did Painter talk to MU about the job to leverage more money/resources from Purdue? Bet yer ass he did, but is it 'playing' to get yourself market value and better resources to recruit a better team? I'm damn glad he did it.

Point being, he didn't release the story. He didn't stir up the frenzy. I don't know what happened behind closed doors, but he didn't run the story - Bernie did.

Story is an assistant coaches car broke down or something of the sort on a recruiting trip and Morgan Burke wouldn't pony up the cash to help with a rental or car repairs or something of the sort. He's a known penny pincher and in football I can handle that. Purdue is a basketball school and resources should not be an issue for them in that sport. I think Painter just made the basketball program better today...and if that lines his pockets? So be it.

The seats in the arena are only a small part of "facilities". Mizzou's are second to none.

As for the rest of the news from yesterday, screw Bernie and his apology. If you're going to stick your neck out and virtually guarantee something, then a loss of credibility and egg on your face is the consequence. Personally, I don't care how remorseful he is about it, he screwed up at his job and strung people along. And considering his penchant for toying with his readers in similar fashion, I'm not going to give him credit for feeling sorry about it.

Moving forward, I did like that there was a report (however reliable) that we were looking into Smart and Mooney. Aside from Mack, those are the only two guys that inspire much hope from me.

Bill Self took over a program that had gone to the Final Four the previous two years.........one of the elite programs in the country. While I think he's a good coach, I think that his situation is significantly different than the situation that Painter would step into.

I think Painter is a good coach. But he hasn't been able to win the Big Ten (a conference that doesn't have a perennial power like Kansas).
