Having the damndest time trying to coordinate schedules for a backpacking trip with little Freedette. Was hoping to go somewhere iconic and inseason for late spring. No qualms about yanking her out of school -road trips and woods are educational. She's not all that overbooked relative to most kids, but the stars don't seem to align.

We've car camped Late April and Mid May in Smokies twice before, and frankly its the best time of year there. No summer crowds and temperate weather. Plus it gives us something to look forward to thru winter. Opportunity lost for fairly cheap airfares if we feel up to tackling Zion or GC.

Its starting to look like the overnighter Se MO trips to get used to backpacking will be all we get in until mid to late Summer. By then, we will have to look north due to [expletive] heat.

[expletive]. I may just have to get truancy officer on us, miss her dance recital or school field trip or something.

Thought some of you guys would enjoy this: http://gearpatrol.com/blog/2011/03/22/v ... ic-dennis/
It's a short documentary two guys made going to Gates of the Arctic National Park. A worthwhile way to waste some time at work.

If it has to wait until September, take her to Pictured Rocks for a week. You won't regret it.

20% coupon for REI members through 4/10. I need a new backpack. My 9 year old gregory shasta has been put through the paces and may not have enough life left in it for my big trip this summer. I'm taking on the 100 miles of wilderness in August, any pack recommendations?

Get the pack that fits best. Stay away fromt he arcteryx if you plan tote 40+ lbs. Another Gregory is probably good for bigger loads.

I don't think I want to watch. I have wanted to visit Gates for a long long time.

Where do those guys, and guys like them, get the money for these kind of trips? It can't be cheap to hire bush pilots, buy solar-powered camera gear, etc. How do I get people to pay me to go to cool places and just film what I see?
