Painter was sitting on the beach drinking cocktails." Sure Alden, you can come by and offer me millions. Sure, release a statement to the press saying I'm interested. "

Painter just played Mizzou and Purdue for millions. While on vacation. At the beach. With cocktails. Without breaking a sweat.

I don't believe that for a second. Painter was calling STL area coaches asking for insight, details, etc. He wouldn't do that if he wasn't interested.

Bernie wrote:I am embarrassed and I apologize

I have been busy at Busch Stadium and this is the first chance I've had to write this post.

No excuses from me. I had what I believed to be very solid info from someone that has been 100 percent correct in the flow of information, at least up to now. And I went with it. Never said it was official, but I clearly gave everyone the impression that Matt Painter would be the next MU coach. And I fully believed that it would happen.

Well, wrong. So I have to wear it. Any criticism of me is justified. If I have lost credibility in your eyes, I deserve that. I have always taken pride in my reporting and in getting things right and I don't worry about being "first." But I trusted the information and proceeded with it. And I embarrassed myself and this news organization in the process.

I apologize to everyone, but especially those of you who put your trust in me. I am very sorry for letting you down. And I can assure you that I will work even harder and more diligently in the future to avoid this kind of failure again.

And thanks to those of you who already have conveyed your support on Twitter. I don't deserve it, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. You have no idea. I hope I can repair my credibility over time.

Thank you.

I can't imagine the Post would be thrilled with him straight up admitting he was wrong like that.

BTW... I told you so.

They should be, it's one of the only things he's written that I've respected.

Of course it's something we appreciate because it's genuine. That's not something you see every day out of someone in his profession. But I would think his employer would rather him spin it to make him look less incompetent.

Big ups. There were no excuses, and that's as open as you'll get.
