There's a lot of bad history with Mizzou and Buzz. It'd be like the Cardinals going out and acquiring Johnny Cueto.
Not only that, but he has a $3.8 million pay out.

Apparently, Painter can opt out of his contract on July 1st. Mizzou wouldn't have to buy him out if they hired him before July 1st...

If they get Painter, I'll be ecstatic. He's a great, great coach.

They're not getting Painter.

Has Mack proven enough yet? Is this his second or third year at Xavier? I'm always leery of a guy until he proves he can recruit his own guys and build it, rather than maintain a team with two NBA guards already on it (Crawford last year, Holloway is debatable this year). I'm not saying they shouldn't look at Mack or anything, but Gregory seems like a good "fit" which seems to be important to many programs.

Gregory has elevated that Dayton program. One that hasn't traditionally been a power. Xavier has always been good.

Where is this cited that Buzz has a $3.6 mil buyout? Not saying it's wrong, just saying that sounds awfully high. I remember a rumor with Temple fans that Al Golden had a $2 mil buyout, and that was totally false. He had a buyout with one school, Penn State.

Bernie's take on Painter.
Matt Painter: There's a little more to this than you'd think. I can't go into details, sorry. On the surface it seems crazy, the idea of Painter leaving his alma mater and dream job to go to Mizzou. Would I be surprised if it happened? Absolutely. I think it's a longshot. Do I think Painter could use Missouri to get a better deal at Purdue? Sure. He's a coach, right? That's what they do. But you shouldn't dismiss it. I'll have to ask you to trust me on this one. And if Painter wants this job, then Mike Alden won't have to go on a coaching search. The "search" would begin and end with Painter. But yes, I am skeptical.

If you think this is the craziest thing you've ever heard, I understand. But check out the Painter quote from last summer. In an interview with the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal-Courier, Painter certainly left the door open.

"You always do your best as an employee for an institution, but you have to take care of you and your family when it comes to negotiating the best contract for yourself," Painter said.

And Painter negotiated an escape clause from his contract that went into effect after the end of Purdue's season. If Painter leaves the only penalty is having to relinquish about $1.2 million in bonuses that were to be paid out later. But there is no buyout. Painter is free to go. And he specifically set his contract up to have such freedom.

"Some coaches have had astronomical buyouts and they go to another job and they're paying it off for three, four, five or six years and you don't want to be in that kind of position," Painter told the Journal & Courier. "Any time you can put yourself in a position to have a lower buyout, that only makes sense."

The door seems to be open -- if only a little, no?

I'm typically looking for someone who has coached a team full of his own guys, but I'll make an exception for Mack. He did a ton of winning, right off the bat(50 total wins, 3 conference losses in 2 years, wins over Cincy, Pitt, and Butler), and he's recruited impact players, right off the bat(Five Top 150 recruits in 2 years to an A-10 school). I don't know if he'd want to leave his hometown and alma mater, but he's definitely at the top of my list.

I must admit, those are funny. If he really flirted with teams every year, rather than just a courtesy listen, I can understand the fanbase angst a little more.
