Old people's obsession with gas prices.

I remember thinking how ridiculous this was a few years back when gas shot up to $4 a gallon. There was a frenzy of rumors floating around about $5 or $10 gas. One of my friends got in line at the pump and waited 45 minutes to get gas and save $10. My question to him was, would you go sit in your car for 45 minutes and do nothing and I'd pay him $10? He declined the offer. I proved my point that time is money.

That conversation is replaced by, "THIS IS IT. THIS IS WHY WE LIVE HERE. I WAS TALKING ON THE PHONE WITH [person who lives somewhere awful] AND THEY SAID IT WAS SNOWING AND GRAY. SNOWING! CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?!" where I live.

I got a kick out of a few friends. The one guy was a bit older and drove this mid-90s honda. Apparently it had a fancy engine in it cause it was supposed to get 91 octane. The guy who owned the car previously was a huge stickler about gas. He'd track his gas mileage to ensure his car's MPG was consistent and he'd put 87 instead of 91 into the tank to save money.

Anyway another friend buys the car off this guy and reads the manual, sees that its supposed to get 91 instead of 87. He continues the trend of tracking gas MPG and sees a huge jump. The previous guy was getting like 18-20 and now he's getting like 25-28.

3.50/28 = 12.5 cents a mile
3.20/20 = 16 cents a mile.

My Acura does the same thing. I've had a few instances where 87octane was put into my car and the MPG difference is quite noticeable.

when we visit my wife's parents, my father-in-law will sometimes do some research for us "as a favor" and figure out what convoluted route we can take on our way home to take advantage of the low gas prices at some particular Citgo or Speedway.

I always thank him but we never actually do it of course. If I was worried about stuff like that I could always get a job, right?

Years back, I worked at a warehouse with this guy who would gather up 8 or 10 cardboard boxes and then drive them to the recycling center. To be fair, I believe he had suffered a traumatic brain injury.
