The black smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel. No more votes will be taken today. Four votes are scheduled for tomorrow, unless one candidate gets 2/3rds of the votes, in which case we will see white smoke and a new pope will have been elected.

I wonder if they'll elect someone under 70 this time.

Pope John Paul II was 58 when he was elected pope in 1978 and died in 2005. Because he served so long, some people thought his successors were elected because they were older, so they wouldn’t serve so long. But Benedict XVI and Francis both experienced health problems, so the cardinals might be looking for a younger man.

As a spiritual leader I don't think age matters so much as long as the person is not facing senility. But there is a lot of work to do as a Pope to run the church and it is really difficult if he is elderly. Francis II was very vibrant when he was first elected but he was 76. John Paul II was one of the youngest popes in the last 225 years. Maybe we can have one who is at least just in his sixties? As a Catholic, I am hoping for the best.

Baby Billy would make an excellent pope.

Black smoke on the morning of Day 2 indicates that no pope was chosen in the two votes in the morning. There will be two more votes in the evening.

I'm formally announcing my candidacy. Sure I'm a Jew, but you know who else was?
