Provel is gourmet

Post by heyzeus »

Bon Appetit Magazine gives Provel the culinary love it deserves.

“Well?” I paused, my taste buds trying to process this new experience. “It’s…different,” I finally said, struggling to describe the creamy, buttery, subtly rich flavor. Melted, the cheese resembled something between béchamel and a thick, savory crème anglaise. “But I seriously dig it,” I continued and proceeded to demolish my slice.

I get the Goldbelly delivery for my birthday each year. Of my wife and kids, I'm the only one who will eat it. Which is GREAT, more Imo's for me.

There’s a St. Louis bar here that carries provel pizza but with supply chain issues they cheat and mix it with provolone but still “hits” better than not having it.

this thread reminded me that i still have 1 imo's cheese from the goldbelly order i placed, i think, last summer. I think i've been holding on to it because i first ordered from goldbelly in 2020. then i wanted to again in 2021 but for the longest time every time i checked the site they were sold out...then at some point, summer, they were finally available (well, the only cheese option since i'm vegetarian). so i think i got spooked i'd have trouble (1st world problem) ordering them again but i just looked today and they appear in stock. hmm...do i make it this weekend? that is the question.

i shared it in 2020 but this was the video that wanted me to try (re-try) imo's again

I've sent that video to more than one non-St Louisan friend who asked me what the deal is with St. Louis pizza. It's a perfect explainer.

I confess that I can't even remember what Imo's Pizza was like, other than the thin crust. All that mattered was the beer next to it.

At least it didn't make me sick like Talayna's Pizza, which had to have stored its ingredients near rat poison. So I guess chalk one up for Imo's.

Ah, Talayna's. Remember the deal they had where if you and another person could finish the giant pizza in an hour, you got $1,000? Or maybe it was $750, but $1,000 if you downed a pitcher of beer or soda with it. I think that was it. A friend and I were thinking of trying, so we went there one day just to try their pizza in general and see what we thought. We just ordered a regular large pizza, and I found it rather tasty...until my friend got a really weird look on his face, then reached into his mouth and pulled out a 2 inch bolt. We called the waitress over and told her about it, and her reply - word for word, which I'll never forget - was, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" Um...I don't know, pretty sure it should be free, at least? Nope, we already ate half the pizza! There wasn't anything wrong with that half! Finally, the best she would agree to do was take half off, as long as we didn't eat anymore. Yeah, you don't have to worry about that.

Vowed I would never go there again, but when two other friends decided to try the challenge, I wanted to see how it went. The pizza looked totally different than the one I had ordered previously - much thicker. My friends were enjoying it at first, then they said all of a sudden the taste and texture changed. It became really gummy and hard to even chew. They ended up getting through less than half of it.

Never went to that place again.

Since Talayna's was near Wash. U., I went there a couple of times with friends. First time, I wound up puking my guts out at home. Since my brother was fine, I figured that I had a stomach bug or something. Went back a month later and had the same reaction.

I never went back, either.

Cecil Whittaker's is usually my go to St. Louis style pizza.
