The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Todd Haley Monday, relieving the coach of his duties just a day after his team lost 37-10 to the New York Jets.

I don't really like it. Mostly because it sets us back. Again. I don't think Haley was all that, but next year the Chiefs will have a high draft pick, they'll get Charles, Berry, Moeaki, and Cassel back. They'll have a weaker schedule instead of the impossible one they faced this year.

They have exceptionally good odds of being a playoff team next year.

Instead, we're starting over. Again. Cassell will have to deal with a new offensive coordinator and QB coach and a new system. Again. Defense will have to learn a new system. Again. Personnel will have to be gutted across the board to fit the new scheme. Again.

People around the Chiefs -- mostly the media, since the FO is largely silent -- talk about how they want to become the next Patriots or Steelers. Well, you don't get there by changing coaches and systems and personnel every few years. If you want that kind of stability, you have to stick it out. Maybe Haley isn't that guy -- he probably isn't -- but unless they bring in Andy Reed or someone like that, then what guarantee do we have that we won't be doing this AGAIN in another 2-3 years?

Maybe I should just get it over with and become a Packers fan.

Wow...I trust Pioli, but wow. There must be some underlying things that just aren't going to get ignored. The Chiefs have been really hurt by injuries in key places this year. I'm interested to see what comes out of the fray.

Just to make my point again... I just want to win! That's it. I want to win. The Chiefs have won absolutely nothing since I've been alive. Haley deserves to be fired. He's not a great coach. But, I'll take the odds on winning next season with the entire staff and system and roster in tact instead of having to rebuild and go through the now all-too-familliar growing pains of changing systems/philsopohy/personnel again.

I agree. I also don't understand letting him go before the end of the season...what's the point?

Surprising move. Is it correct that every team in the division has changed coaches within the last couple of years?

My personal opinion is that Matt is not the quarterback to get them to where they want to be. I say that objectively, because obviously Carson Palmer isn't for the Raiders either. I get tired of how the coach always gets the blame for poor play, injuries etc. Especially in the Denver and KC situations lately, because the fired coaches were pretty much labeled boy wonders from the get go. Did they all of a sudden get dumb?

The season is over, so some moves that are slightly less competitive but useful for the future(playing Stanzi, for example) would be ideal. Haley may not have been open to those types of moves with his job in jeopardy. Crennel has a decent shot of sticking around for the new coach if he's an offensive guy(or even a 3-4 defensive guy), and his promotion might be on a "if you do what you're told" basis, so you could see some benefit in that sense.

Personally, I think Haley is a bit unlucky, or got a bit of a raw deal. Between the injuries and the first place schedule, I'm not sure how they could've done much better. On the other hand, the offense has been atrocious after he ran off Weis, the injuries probably have at least some correlation to his unconventional training camp this year, and his abrasive personality was a negative.

If the new guy is good with a 3-4, I don't think it's much of a step back. If they hire an offensive coach it might be business as usual, since they had a new offensive coordinator each of the last 3 years. The larger problem is that they have neither an incredible defense(though it is pretty solid with some good pieces) or a franchise QB(Cassel is capable, but paid more than that). So the new coach and Pioli probably need to make that decision on Cassel reasonably quickly. If Cassel isn't the guy, they need to trade him(and probably Stanzi too) and go after what looks like a pretty good QB class. If they like Cassel or don't think it's wise to dump him, then they need to add an impact player to both lines and hope that Charles and Berry come back at 100%.

That star has dimmed quite a bit, hasn't it?
