Went to the Cubs-Cards game recently (the 4-3 loss ) with a couple of old friends. I don't know if it's the alcohol or what but they can't seem to sit still for a game. They wanna spend the whole time walking around, getting food, getting beer, walking here, walking there. It's a baseball game, not a freakin' nightclub! And I notice they aren't alone in this way of "watching" a baseball game. And don't get me started on all the between-inning noise. How I long for the days when you could sit down and watch a game and actually hear what was happenning on the field.
It's the shortening attention spans of society in general.
clement, I don't know how old you and your friends are, but in my advertising classes in college, the "MTV generation" was often cited as the start of the decline in attention spans.
Here's a neat little trick: If you can find a 30-second TV commercial for, say, Pepsi, from the mid-80s or earlier (on YouTube maybe?), count the number of camera changes. Then, find a 30-second Pespi commercial on your TV today and count the number of camera changes. The difference is quite significant.
It's why I keep score at most games I attend, and have taught my daughter to do the same. She has the same problem with her friends, and tells me that it's hard for her to concentrate on the game when she doesn't use a scorecard.
