I'm in love with his song "Have A Little Faith In Me" at the moment.

Looking at some of his discography, it looks like he's been around for a long time. Why haven't I heard of him before I heard this song? Any others I should download?

I know you're a big fan of that particular song, and when I originally bought "Bring the Family", that was the first song that jumped out at me as well. It is indeed a beautifully written and sung song. But over time, a different track on that album overtook "have a little faith" as my favorite.

It's called "Lipstick Sunset" - beautifully sad lyrics, and it has a weird slide guitar solo in it that fits the mood of the song perfectly.

I just had to get away
Before some sad old song
Brought more tears to my eyes
And Lord, I couldn't tell her
That her love was only killing me

Maybe love's like that for me
Maybe I can only see
As you take away the light

This is so odd. I have one of his songs randomly in my iTunes and just re-discovered it yesterday. I'm not even sure how it got there. But I sure do like it.

Both are great songs, Elphie. The guy is a terrific songwriter.

Other songs to check out - "Memphis in the Meantime", "Paper Thin", "Child of the Wild Blue Yonder", "Riding with the King" (covered by Eric Clapton and BB King).

Most of the songs rock - but aren't ballads like "Faith" (although "Lipstick" is). I still think you'll like most of them.

For ballads, along with "Lipstick Sunset", try "Feels Like Rain" and "Angel Eyes".

Hiatt Comes Alive At Budokan is one of the best, most underappreciated live albums ever. Fantastic version of Perfectly Good Guitar.

Excuse my exuberance in advance, Elphie--I saw your post earlier at work today, but could'nt respond then )

Echoing what others have written, John Hiatt is a superb songwriter (his body of work more than holds its own with anyone out there, IMO), and his live shows are consistently amazing...the fact that despite his brillance, JH remains just below the level of "big-time" recognition and acclaim means that his shows are nearly always in smaller, intimate settings (i.e. the Pageant or the Fox in St. Louis), and he's absolutely approachable after shows...

To me, Hiatt is "the patron saint of married guys" I really got into his music about 10 years ago, as i was summoning the courage to fall in love with the woman who would be my wife. Much of Hiatt's work then spoke perfectly to me --a lot of blundering and wandering around before finally finding one's soulmate--like this line from Real Fine Love:
I thought I had a line on somethin'
maybe no one else could say
but they couldn't find it in their hearts to get outta my way.
Then outta nowhere-and for nothin'- you came into my life
I'd seen an angel or two before, but I'd never asked one to be my wife

Have a Little Faith is John's signature song from his signature album (Bring the Family) , but in addition to the songs others have mentioned, I really love these as well:
