Too cold and too liberal to be part of the South. But Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky are all firmly in the South.

Anything south of wherever I happen to be is southern.

When I moved from Iowa to the STL area, I really thought STL seemed "southern" to me. Now, after living in the ATL area for a couple of years, y'all don't know southern! :)

And if I hear one more comment about the "war of northern aggression", I will

Good question, and I'm surprised the vote is as lopsided as it is. My wife is from Chicago, and when we lived there she would have said "Southern". There are elements of both, but I think it's much more midwestern than southern, but there are elements of both to be sure.

StL is a Midwestern city, but if you venture more than about 50 or 100 miles south, you are firmly rooted in southern US country.

It's mid-west. It's got the "Gateway to the West" in it, obviously symbolizing the mid-point of East and West. Hence, Mid-west.
