If Stanton doesn’t come here because he didn’t want to be a Cardinal, it’s disappointing but whatever. If he doesn’t come because ownership won’t take on enough money for the Marlins to make a deal, then there’s no point in expecting anything to change with Machado the following year.
Why?

They’ll pay and he can play with his buddy Bryant.

Pretty disappointed in the coverage of this by the Cardinals reporters. When is the last time that we had any substantive information about our pursuit of Stanton and its status from one of our guys? All Goold has been doing is copying information gleaned from Miami and SF reporters and giving us what was essentially a fluff piece about the Cards maybe having the chance to sit down with Stanton and his people one day. Meanwhile Miami and SF guys are coming up with new information left and right.

Maybe there is nothing to report. Maybe the Cards are keeping the lid really tight on all of this, but with all the noise by SF and Miami about $ amounts, players involved in the deal, sit downs, etc. all we're really hearing is "Carlos Gonzalez might be an option". They could make a killing right now on hits and clicks if they provided some kind of information about what the Cards have actually offered, what kind of money they're willing to take, where they feel they stand in these negotiations, and if they have started turning to other pursuits.

To me... crickets from the Cards when there's fire and smoke in SF means we need to either get this done or get out of it fast because other doors are going to close quickly once Stanton falls and we don't want to be left holding Carlos Gonzalez.

Goold has had laps run around him for years by the national media.

If it's true that the Marlins prefer the Cardinals offer and they have the Giants permission to speak to Stanton, it's all over for the Cardinals.

Feels like the Cardinals' chances come down to convincing Stanton to play there. I don't know. I'd find that unpalatable if I was paying a guy hundreds of millions.
