Re: Update: Cards Sweeten Holliday Offer, p 88
How much are the Yankees paying in luxury taxes per year? Is that accounted for in their overall payroll budget of $200+ million?
EDIT: I believe this year they'll end up paying over $15 million in luxury taxes (~39 million over the cap at a luxury tax rate of 40%)...so who's to say they won't go get Holliday?

I would guess that the Yanks will use the rest of the money they plan to spend on pitching.

CC, Burnett, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes. To be honest, their move was to go and get Halladay and/or Lackey and move one or both of the young guys into the pen permanantly. But with those top pitchers gone, I really dont see them going after the typical #4-5 types and giving them 3+ years like Marquis, Piniero, etc will want. They are going to have to trade for that #4 starter I think. Maybe one of the Braves starters like Lowe, Vazquez, etc.BW23 wrote:I would guess that the Yanks will use the rest of the money they plan to spend on pitching.

1:30pm: ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Cardinals don't believe many teams are competing for Holliday on the level they are. Olney says the Cards intend to stand by a five-year offer - that's considerably short of the eight-year deal hinted at yesterday.
The Yankees have no intention of bidding on Holliday, according to Olney's sources.

Interesting indeed. Makes sense to me...add that sixth year in the end, and sweeten the money a little bit, and we should have a deal!
I'm cautiously optimistic about this, at this point, but I still am not certain one of the "evils" doesn't come out of the woodwork and snatch him.

The obvious question - how would Olney know ANY of this.JL21 wrote:1:30pm: ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Cardinals don't believe many teams are competing for Holliday on the level they are. He's guessing, just like all of us are.

If the length is wrong, I'm guessing the money is wrong too...Bay was reported at turning down a 4yr/63 million contract by the Mets (if that was reported correctly).JL21 wrote:1:30pm: ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Cardinals don't believe many teams are competing for Holliday on the level they are. 5yrs/16 million makes no sense...and to me, would be an absolute steal.
Something isn't lining up.

Things are looking pretty good for us on the Holliday front. The economy has certainly helped our case, coupled with the fact that the Yankees just won the WS and are probably a bit more sanguine about their roster this offseason. I am Boras understands this and will push real hard for an opt-out clause, which may not be such a bad idea if it means securing Holliday for 2-3 years with a backloaded deal.

Re: Update: Cards Sweeten Holliday Offer, p 88
Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Cardinals would like to stand on a five-year offer for free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
This differs greatly from the eight-year offer reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. According to Olney, while the Cardinals are flexible to altering the deal, there is sentiment within the organization that they aren't competing with many teams -- if any -- at a similar level. As the dominoes continue to fall around major league baseball, they might be right.
