A lot of his piano stuff is self-indulgent and annoying. I really like him, but I don't get the worship. For me he's hit and miss.

I watched Cold Around the Heart last night. I have no idea why. I stayed up until 3am watching a horrible David Caruso/Kelly Lynch/Chris Noth movie. I was horrible, horrible, horrible.

Greetings ya bath-takin' silk-wearin' mint-munching lily-huggers! Aye I'm feelin' a mighty frost blowin' up my kilt in Edinburgh. I taken it so long I canna take it no more! Fortunately I be takin' the low road over to Normandy...

Il Divo - No not the faux opera boyband, but a new Italian movie about the life and power of Italian politician Giulio Andreotti. Without a great deal of knowledge about the political history surrounding the story of this man, I found the movie to be confusing and bordering on self-indulgent. The story was interesting, and the stylized approach of director Paolo Sorrentino simultaneously held my interest and distracted me, if that's possible. 6.5/10

The Class (Entre les Murs) - Oscar nominated French film plays like a documentary as it covers a year in the life of a teacher and his students in a racially mixed neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris. The film doesn't pull any punches, confirms many stereotypes about 21st century Parisian youth, and certainly doesn't provide any solutions other than to just keep plugging away at life and at work. Great acting all around but especially by the students. 9/10

Departures - Japanese film that surprised everyone last month when it took home the best foreign language film Oscar is even more surprising at how conventional, sentimental, and trite it is. The start is charming enough as it follows our protagonist (a laid off cellist who takes a job as a mortician of sorts), but deteriorates in the last half. As a huge fan of Japanese cinema I can only cringe that this movie is the one that will get a lot of overseas attention because of the Oscar. Waltz with Bachir and The Class are both far superior films to this. Not terrible, just not particularly good. 5.5/10

Gran Torino - Finally caught Clint's latest. Very enjoyable but at the same time I can kind of see why it hasn't garnered the same level of acclaim as some of his other movies. It's a nicely told story but it never seems to make that leap into something more profound than a basic vigilante vs gangsters movie (though there were fertile elements in the plot to go more deeply). Eastwood's Kowalski character was kinda funny and entertaining but really bordered on a caricature. 7/10

bah David Caruso! --I'd like to see a movie with both him and Kevin Spacey getting tossed off a building in the first scene.

recently - I saw parts of Rambo-First Blood on cable -there's a familiar looking prick that gets in Rambo's way and gets knocked around. IMDB confirms it was a young David Caruso..

Better yet, I'd like to see Spacey and Caruso roughed up by Fredo before he has a lackey toss them over. I know the great John Cazale is dead -but make good use of CGI and it could happen.

why so much anger Freed?

just watched "high plains drifter"...pretty good...as i watched it i thought it was "ok", with classic/hilarious eastwood facial expressions...but the final fight was cool and the twist was twisty, mordecai ruled too...

Slumdog Millionaire- Completely predictable but still a pretty good movie. I thought the stuff when the kids were youngest was really strong, the rest was just okay. I don't know if I would call it Best Picture but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
