According to SiriusXM's Craig Mish, Giants executives are meeting with representatives for Giancarlo Stanton in Los Angeles.

One would think this would only happen if the Giants and Marlins had agreed or were close to agreeing on the terms of a trade. We'll probably be hearing more on this soon.

That’s what they were mentioning the other day with the trade that sent schilling to BOS. You usually don’t speak with the guy to try and convince him to come/waive his NTC unless a deal is already agreed upon between the 2 teams, and that’s the final piece.

I just don’t get it...that deal is garbage.

I get it if Stanton doesn’t want to come here. That’s fine. But don’t trade him for crap. How does that deal make you better? You can still reduce payroll down by a lot and get even better...

You keep stanton, and then trade pieces like yelich, gordon, Ozuna, etc...and actually get GREAT prospects to then build AROUND Stanton for cheap.

I presume the Cardinals will also meet with Stanton. If not, they never had a chance.

I get the impression the Marlins are trying to both slash payroll and try not to alienate their remaining fanbase at the same time. Trading reasonable contracts for future prospects is probably the worst way to achieve the second goal. Stanton's contract means you're not going to get a star to replace him with, but a package that gives you several guys you'll see in a MLB uniform immediately or within months is at least something in that regard. Are there better packages that meet that criteria? Possibly/probably, but maybe they really like Panik, or maybe Stanton has given a clear signal he's only going to one of a few places and this is as good as it gets, or maybe other teams haven't stepped up in terms of the player + contract package this would represent.

Stanton had no intention of playing for St. Louis if he ends up on the Giants. The Cardinals 2nd and 3rd rate prospects are a better package than that.

Couldn't they do that over the phone?

In person recruiting probably doesn't hurt.
