Kid brag - I been riding a stationary recumbent bike half-hour next to her as a base of the workout. Her progress is exponential. I struggle to keep the same #s. Though we switched bikes, and I have it in my head that the one she now rides is easier.

Anyhows, working out with her keeps me hopping....the randomness. i.e. now we're going to do box-jumps? She's always getting yoga or core [expletive] to try from the internet.

I noticed the same thing when I did some workouts her youth XC team - sometimes they bail, but they typically just go for it.

How old again? Keep encouraging her with XC. I had a football/baseball kid, and a XC/track kid. XC/track kids are better kids - stay out of trouble. Great group of kids.

I was a football/baseball kid.
about 13. She's been intimidated about XC/track for a while - the singularly competitive aspect, the pain wall, coupled with some growing pain-ish knee issues at the same time. I don't push her (I see a lot of parents that do though), because at that age I didn't care for it either.

...but, now that she has completely changed her eating for the better and been working out like an aerobic beast for over 2 months --I have been dropping hints that the running thing might seem easier, be good to add back into the mix as fitness for soccer. And she isn't rejecting the hints as vehemently as she did previously.

Definitely will wait until its nicer outside - she'll never get to running if I push her out the door into the cold & dark [expletive] I've been running in lately. She's a good runner, but not the destined to be in state championship level that some of the kids on the xc club are -another source of intimidation, she needs a confidence booster against more normal kids. she's smart and will figure out a good fit.

And RE: the XC/Track kids -That frequent exercise and self-discipline it takes does something to the noggin, and seems to help them in other parts of life. that is the ones that want to be there, and not made to go by obsessive parents. Have to be careful with kids and running though, it can be tough on the body- and they don't have the experience to know when something isn't right, when to back off at times.

Yeah, it is sort of circular logic. I think it (exercise) helps kids/people be smarter, but sometimes they have to be smart enough to want to exercise in the first place. Maybe it's partly why the kids/people that don't partake, tend to get caught in such a downward spiral.

All I know is, when the kid is healthier, she does better in school. Ever since her exercise kick - happier, better school-work habits, likes being more self-sufficient, more confident.

Anyway, here's a Ted talk bit about the Three Things You Can Do to Grow More Brain Cells:
[SHOW]
Learning
Sex
Running

I made sure my wife saw the article, at risk that she'd tell me to run more and pick up a second language.

All seven starting runners were Freshmen! Holy [expletive] - a dynasty I thought. They will win 4
But the thing is all of those girls kept running, because it's just a great group of kids. You would hear stories at the banquets at the end of the year, get a peek into their world, and it's just a great group to hang out with for four year.
I notice that the way it seems with females in HS. My friend's daughter- she peaked as an exceptional runner in 7th grade. the physical/mental aspect of dealing with a different size body, hormones. there tends to be an injury in there too - that tends to hit females in HS.

it's tough because coaches want to win - and sometimes the runners' best years aren't on that schedule. I think some of them could come out as good runners as adults - if the coach doesn't tear them down physically/mentally while they are trying to adapt during their HS or college years.
----------------------------
On the lack of press for running- I was reading some comments on this topic with the Olympic Marathon trials tomorrow - which is the U.S. Super Bowl amongst running peeps. yet heard of nowhere else except that circle. I'm not going to kid that it should be up there with other sports or evangelize for it... I'm going to tape it, and maybe watch if I have time. Definitely will check some results.

.....anyway -the comments were about how running is the only sport where the everyday hacks get doted on as much/more than the elites. It's like if the local hack gets the cover of Golf Magazine rather than Tiger Woods etc. This hurts the widespread appeal as a sport- the elevation of running fitness while the superhumans like Meb toil in relative obscurity.

I have to venture to say it lacks any popularity because watching someone run long distance, is well, REALLY boring.

Don: Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?
Napoleon Dynamite: I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!
Don: Did you shoot any?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?
Don: What kind of gun did you use?
Napoleon Dynamite: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?
