For Burly, I'm sure it's a question of his defensive value. He hits well enough, but isn't a plus defender anywhere. He has two more years of team control, which takes him I think to age 29. How many years of his 30s does the team want to buy out, when at peak he's a 2-3 WAR player solely from the bat?

I don’t think his defense is critically bad. I have no clue what Burly would take. I’m sure Chaim has had discussions with his agent and that would determine whether he is traded or extended. If Burly would take 4/60-70, I’d extend him. If he is wanting 5 or 6 for 100-120, I guess I have to pause and consider.

Time will tell soon though.

In no way saying Bloom isn't trying to make things happen or complaining about him, but this has the feel of the days of Mo where we waited for something to happen at the deadline but nothing did.

It’s looking bleak. Truth is the players with expiring contracts probably don’t have much value.

The Angels allowing Mozeliak to gut their franchise when he’s worked there for 15 minutes is really something.

FWIW, Bloom was talking about this a couple weeks ago and his comment was something like most of these talks aren't going to be serious until the last couple days and even the last minute of the last day.

Not saying that's why, just that that's how he claims to see it.

None of the players the Cardinals have been rumored about trading (players that are free agents after the season, or Noot) is going to bring back anything more than a teams 18-30th best prospect. Hope is you get a former highly ranked guy that has had a bad 6-12 months that you hope you can rebuild with your development team, or a super young interesting player that is a far ways from helping the MLB squad. Just collecting lottery tickets for milk that is on the verge of expiring while you are on vacation.

The good thing to note is that when the Cardinals are a playoff bound team in the future, these prices should make it affordable to add to a successful core.

Even the Yankees have been sellers in recent history and are probably the best example of not having a substantial downturn.
