So, say you throw 2011 away and make up your mind instead of letting Tebow play in week 6 you are just going to mail it in - despite how wrong that is for a professional sports team to do and how against the rules it is or should be. Then, you get Luck. Lucks a decent-like QB, no John Elway but no Ryan Leaf either. 2012 ends with a 8-8 record. Then, week 2 of the 2013 season, Von Miller blows out his knee/suffers a concussion/etc. Do you tank that season as well to try to get the #1 pick again?

When does it end? At what point do you just play the game, do your best, fight like hell to get a SB ring and use the draft to supplement your team as you see necessary? Even if that means taking an Aaron Rodgers instead of an Alex Smith.

Well of course ideally you run a really good team and build such a well-rounded roster that you can draft luxuries instead of needs a la the Packers and Rodgers or you look for high upside guys late in the draft a la the Patriots and Brady.

Right, but even though early QB's can bust like Russel and Ryan Leaf and Tim Couch etc etc, the notion you can easily identify a franchise QB by waiting to the 6th round is absurd. I'm suggesting that first round QBs are significantly more likely to succeed than 4th or 5th round or undrafted QB's, not that highly drafted QB's are guarantee at all.

For every Warner and Brady there are 10 Curtis Painter's, Dan Orlovsky's or other backup QB's who are just roster fodder.

I'm not necessarily saying I would tank either, but I sure as hell wouldn't pass on a good QB because I had Tim Tebow.

For every QB you just named, I am sure you can find a bust as well. It's not a guarantee. That is the point. And it certainly isn't, imo, enough of a guarantee that you would be better off throwing away a division winning season to go after a QB in the draft.

The point is that the Broncos can win, like they're doing, and still have a chance to get a good quarterback. They don't need a top-5 pick. I'd prefer that they win.

By the way, to correct my previous error, it was not the wonderlic that Tebow excelled at. It was the NFL combine, where he ran the 4th fastest 40 as a quarterback, tied the combine record for vertical jump for a quarterback, and had the 2nd best broad jump among quarterbacks. I believe his bench press was tops among quarterbacks also, but I'm not certain.

Anyway, my point is that he's an exceptional athlete, and was an exceptional college football player......... so there was no reason to think that he couldn't play in the NFL. Now, whether he could make it as a starting NFL quarterback is an entirely different issue.

But who is saying there was "reason to think that he couldn't play in the NFL"? The only issue being discussed is him as a QB. Whether he could make it as a tight end, you might as well have been wondering back in 2005 if Wainwright could cut it as a shortstop.

Is it really outside the realm of possibility that Tebow could win a Super Bowl? I've heard that a million times and I just don't believe it. Those 3 fumbles don't happen last Sunday and we're looking at a very even match between the Pats (who are essentially considered the class of the league right now) and the Broncos. Why is it impossible? As has been mentioned before, there have been worse quarterbacks who have won it all.

Another thing... I don't buy the "gimmick offense" argument. Yeah, the first few games that Tebow was thrown in there, it was a gimmick offense, but these last few games haven't been anything we haven't seen from Philadelphia these last couple of years.

Philly has never run an option based offense, man. It doesn't get much more gimmicky.

I love him as a full back-tight end-qb hybrid. He's definitely an NFL player and the right coordinator could use him very effectively.

Philly has never run an option based offense, man. It doesn't get much more gimmicky.

It's not an option-based offense anymore. At least, not based on the last few games (which I will assume is the direction they're moving in). Now, that's not to say that they're not running the option at all, because they have been. But it's not the base of their offense anymore, and it won't be. I'd imagine the option was less than 15% of their plays. And Tebow has shown promise of running that style of offense.
