Re: Recently viewed movies

Post by ghostrunner »

I love many older movies (pre-1960), but I do feel they're flawed in many cases. I think certain things have been refined over the years. In general, I don't like the stage-oriented, overly emotive style of acting in many older films. It makes sense given where the actors came from, but I prefer a more natural style. The foreign films had this right years before we did from what I can tell.

Music is another one. It's overdone today depending on the genre, but it can be obnoxious in older films. Something that ought to fill you with quiet dread instead has this blast of trumpets accompanying it.

I also like camera movement, and many older films just plunked the camera down in one spot and perhaps panned left and right if needed. Again, it's more of a stage convention but obviously has something to do with practical issues and technology. Hitchock and (later) John Frankenheimer really pushed the boundaries on this though when other people were sticking with same static camera work. Orson Welles mixed it up a bit too.

And the French New Wave.

I went movie-crazy over the weekend.

-Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Watching this was like receiving a Christmas present, opening it, and discovering that someone has given you dog feces.

-Hellboy II
It's sloppy at times, but it's really fun. Del Toro is a master at using CGI in a way that's non-obtrusive.

-Kalifornia
I wish I'd watched this one a long time ago. It was spectacular.

-Ghost House: The Substitute
I'd seen 2 other Ghost House features before this one, and they were garbage. But this one was actually pretty solid. The lead actress acts her arse off.

-Pocket Money
70's Paul Newman flick also starring Lee Marvin. Bleh.... bland and boring. Mediocre in just about every way.

Yup. Pretty relentless. And Brad Pitt is outstanding.

I remember Pitt's role in 'True Romance' (very highly recommended
for a hundred reasons) as the goofball stoner roommate and thinking
to myself, "where have I seen this guy before?"
kalifornia has some of the best quotes ever

Reebs. That's what we used to call them when we was kids. It's beer spelled backwards

Hey, if you switched two letters in your name it'd spell, um... brain!

Is it just me, or did this trip go downhill since we ran out of Lucky lager

this ain't Lucky lager

Adele.. put your ti#^y back in

I've been meaning to see Kalifornia for a while too, I know a guy on another forum that raves about it.

I watched The Racket last night, decent police procedural-slash-noir with Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan going head-to-head as cop and killer. It was a bit dry, but I'll watch anything with Mitchum - one of my five favorite actors, in a group with Pacino, Henry Fonda, and De Niro. Not sure who would round that list out.

Paul Newman for sure and perhaps Gregory Peck?

Also a big Robert Mitchum fan.

Ah what the heck, my top ten:

Robert DeNiro
Henry Fonda
Paul Newman
Robert Mitchum
Toshiro Mifune
Humphrey What's-his-name
Alec Guinness
Lee Marvin
Harrison Ford
Jimmy Stewart
throw james cagney and gunnar bjornstrand in there and that's a mighty fine list

Great list. The only two that wouldn't be considered for my top ten would be Ford and DeNiro. I love DeNiro in a couple movies but, man, he's been in some real embarrassments too. Also, Newman used to be a favorite but I find less and less I like of him as the years go by. I'd throw Buster Keaton and possibly a couple others like Edward G Robinson or John Mills in there. The Duke, although not necessarily the best actor, would also have to be considered.

I'd probably go:

Pacino
De Niro
Fonda
Mitchum
Brando
Newman
Alain Delon
Eastwood
Bill Holden
Nicholson

Last night I saw, Let The Right One In. It is phenomenal. Anyone else seen it?

Apparently love affairs with vampires are a popular theme.
