I dont hate the stats but I would definately be more interested if I knew what they meant and how to use them.

I just ask if I'm unsure of something, posters are always happy to explain them.

I read more baseball threads than I post in, but when someone starts using a stat I don't get I google it and usually get at least a rudimentary idea as to what they are discussing...

(I personally don't like doing math (some people do) so I'd rather have a general understanding than a deep one.)

Let me hazard a guess. I think people don't like advanced stats because they feel that their use constitutes an exclusionary elite discourse. (How's that for post-modern language?) You feel like you can't contribute because your observation is going to be pummeled by a bunch of advanced analysis to which you do not have access. Perhaps all this talk about VORP and EQA and whatnot seems to turn a simple game enjoyed by all into a nerdy intellectual exercise.

Anyway, I don't agree with this analysis, but I can see that it makes some sense.

I kind of agree with your first paragraph, but I wouldn't use the word "nerdy".

And I don't mean to come off as a dick, either.

Oh, and the disenchantment that some feel with the forum has A LOT more to do about personalities than stats, IMO. But I guess you are always going to run into that.

Isn't a "paper tiger" something designed to appear strong that is actually flimsy? Which arguments do you feel that way about?

There's a difference between asking a "lighter side" question and what went on in that thread. IMO it was completely derailed by silliness when it wasn't appropriate time to do so.
