for a lot of the Republicans I've known their belief hasn't been in conservatism (state's rights, small government, low spending) but in moralism....

and again there has been a strong underlying link of contempt for others who don't share their views, and for the poor and minorities...apparently some Republicans must think that everyone in the country has the same chance to be rich, or even that everyone in the country can be rich (which obviously can't happen)...

I must qualify that by saying that I grew up in small towns, where government/judicial corruption and favoritism is everywhere and where most of the government is run by 'republicans'....

if Republicans truly did believe in small government and state's rights I'd be all for them, but when the recent Republican president does more to reverse small government and low spending than anyone in many years it's hard to get on board

Really, I blame the democrats for where our country is...the middle part of this country is up for the taking...most don't really know how to think for themselves, or don't have the time, hence why 75% of McCains ads have been attack ads...and the Republicans have been the best at taking advantage of this...good for them...
I grew up and currently live in a small town. It's very conservative in many ways. Not always good, either.

But I really don't know any fellow Christians that have contempt for non-believers and/or minorities. In fact, our church is very supportive of both.

My Christian beliefs drive everything that I do and everything that I am. Does that spill into politics? Of course. Why wouldn't it? But it's just a part, and small government and low spending are probably bigger reasons that I lean right.

Now, I'm not rich. I never will be. I chose a profession that won't allow that. The majority of people I work with are Republicans. They'll never be rich either. But I do believe that people have chances to better themselves. Very good chances. It's why I'm in the profession I'm in. So please don't think that all Republicans are rich, think everyone has a chance to be rich, or things along those lines. It's far from the case. But I would like to keep most of the money I earn.

Now, I completely agree with your assertion on the current regime. It's hardly been small government. And, as I've said in this thread, I don't think McCain is the best choice in the world to steer away from that. But he's the best choice among the two major parties that will be on the ballot.

As for attack ads, it's why I love Tivo so. I don't watch ads. :)

Some really smart people along time ago wrote:Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

DVR/Tivo is awesome...

easily one of my favorite new technologies...

I almost never watch a show when it's on...just record it and watch it later...

now, my problem with Republicans talking about small government has a lot to do with corporate bailouts (they say that the private sector should be the one investing in new energy technologies, but will be right there to loan money to bad companies like Ford and GM, or to the banking industry...if a company is so bad that it goes bankrupt, you shouldn't reward them, let the private sector work it out, right Republicans?) and the immense money spent on the War on Drugs (not to mention the 1 in 10 black males that are behind bars mostly because the moralistic illegalization of the USE--not abuse--of drugs)...
someone small-government minded should realize that this is a state right, along with gay marriage and abortion....it's not something we want our huge federal government that can now go to war whenever it wants with whoever it wants deciding for 51% of the population....

I still don't see what your point is with what you highlighted. I know what the First Amendment says already. I didn't need you to quote it.

I've gathered from your comments both in this thread and in the past that you are a teacher. Did you happen to catch Obama's comment during his speech about making a concerted effort to boost teacher pay? Also, under his economic (tax) plan (in a chart posted many pages ago), I would assume that it would call for better tax rates for you in your current tax bracket.

So economically for you, Obama might seem to be the right choice. I can understand though if you do not agree with his social/moral stances, or with his broader economic plan.

even as an extremely independent minded person who is not Christian I don't see how you can tell and individual person that their faith shouldn't influence their political beliefs...

it's just that their faith beliefs shouldn't influence my life either...

If this is about selecting a female VP candidate, I think that's confusing Obama's message of "change". I believe his message is about trying new policies, and change the way government goes about it's business. Not that a minority or woman might be president.
