I don't think either side really wants to get to Wednesday without a deal. That's the deadline for the union to disband, which I believe makes the whole CBA null and void. Lockout over, but then every contract is basically not valid, making every player a free agent, and no salary cap. Could get really, really wierd.

So, Wednesday is here. Will something be completed today. What will it mean if the union dissolves? I can only imagine that has the potential to do MAJOR damage to the league and sport, no?

Encouraging. It's the nuclear option, so there's still a chance of a season. Looks like a 48 game season starting on the 19th, no inter-conference games, 7 games against divison teams and a home-and-away against the other 10 in-conference teams. Training camp would need to start on the 11th.

This is not like MLB or NFL shortened seasons which were asterik seasons. A short NHL season is better than their long one, IMO. Cut away to the playoffs sooner.

Off topic, but I've always thought the NHL should structure their season to take advantage of winter months to highlight their playoffs. There's a bit of an opening in the sports programming schedule from now until March that they could utilize. It may be different in Canada, but in the US, we don't care about hockey during fall baseball and reg season football. And once NCAA hoops and April baseball roll around, the NHL is relegated to a cult following.
