Recently saw Hitchcock's "Frenzy" - its 3 stars, probably a lesser Hitchcock flick to me. Its a gritty tale about a psychopathic killer loose in London. Its one of Hitcock's later movies, so he makes use of the violence and nekkidness- more acceptable onscreen by then. You see the main murder of the film, preceded by a gross rape scene, which is quite different from the older Psycho - where you see the shadows and the blood circling the drain. Hitchcock did more with less in Pyscho, as opposed to Frenzy.

Its still good because the guy knows how to tell a tale and work in some twisted humor. camera angles you don't see from other moviemakers. But with the grunge of this movie, I miss the style and class of Hitchcocks older movies

Saw The Station Agent - , a man born with dwarfism moves to rural New Jersey to live a life of solitude, only to meet a chatty hot dog vendor and a woman dealing with her own personal loss. This comedy sounds kind of odd, but it is a written, directed and acted very well.

There's a lot of the classics and AFI's Top 100 that I've yet to see. I kind of have to be in the mood for it and I try to purge myself of preconceived ideas based on reviews and conventional wisdom. Which makes it harder to get into the mood for some - esp. the older, black and white films. I mean, after you know about Rosebud, is it worth seeing?

By far yes. Citizen Kane is great for far more than a twist reveal.

That AFI list tried to get a sampling of movies from all eras - thus it does have some really old films that, although they could still be good, I don't think I'd care to see them other than as passing curiousity.

I agree w/ third man - Citizen Kane is worth seeing, even though you may know some of the plot already.

It's funny, whenever I see those top 100 lists, especially AFI, I always get the feeling they're sprinkling in new films (although not deservedly) to keep the contemporary audience happy.

I feel the same way. IMO, they should prove they stand the test of time.

Although I think as one their criteria, the movie could be rated highly as groundbreaking than simply as a good plot, cinematography, etc.

Still, it's been a while since I've reviewed the list. Maybe my feelings have changed about some of the contemporary movies listed.

looking over the list, I do like a few from the 30s like Mr. Smith goes to Wash.

I do see your point RA , there as many modern ones I don't care for, and am surprised they are on the list - even though they may have been popular i.e. ET, TiTanic and several more.

Right. If a movie's great and deserving of all the accolades, I wouldn't want to hold it hostage simply because it's too new. On the other hand, I think these lists are trying to be all things to all people with equal distribution among the decades. I know these lists are only entertainment and it's senseless to get into heated debates concerning them but I'll be the first to admit that I'm forever grateful to numerous lists and books over the years that have steered me toward hundreds of great films and directors that I might not have otherwise found.
