Marlins warn Stanton: Accept a trade or you’ll be only star on stripped-down team

According to two sources with knowledge of discussions, the Marlins informed Stanton in October that if he refused to waive his no-trade rights and accept a trade, he would remain a Marlin and team officials would look to trade off other top players to reduce payroll.

While it wasn’t presented to Stanton as an ultimatum, one source said, it shows that the Marlins aren’t without leverage in their efforts to deal Stanton and relieve them of the financial burden he brings. Stanton has said he doesn’t wish to be part of a rebuild.

And the real dance begins. I daresay this bodes well for us.

That was my first thought as well. Best thing the Cards can do is make the best offer and then let the Marlins basically force Stanton to take the trade or play with a bunch of AAAA'ers. Either way we win, because we can immediately move on Yelich or Ozuna.

So the Giants aren't interested now?

They are, but the Cardinals can put together a better package.

Right. I'm just thinking that if the Marlins' options are 1)trade him to the Giants for a lesser package, because Stanton won't agree to a Cardinals trade or 2)keep him and punish him; Number 1 seems like the obvious best choice for everyone, unfortunately.

Maybe. The offer that the Giants reportedly sent to the Marlins was basically Wong, Grichuk and Dakota Hudson for Stanton. It may even be a little worse than that. If the Giants take on the whole contract, it could be a moot point anyway. If not, I could see the Marlins taking their chances Stanton will waive for someone else.

Yeah, that Giants package was atrocious. They could always keep him, and hope that the market improves mid-season next year, too.
