What free agents still out there would it suck to miss out on?

Arrieta and Darvish? Anyone else?

JD Martinez who won’t even get a look. Possibly others depending upon the price.

I was OK with them passing on Wade Davis, considering the deal he got from the Rockies. But once that happened they should have traded for a closer like Colome or similar since there weren't any other very good ones on the market, and since they didn't like Reed for whatever reason.

Who goes to the bench if we sign Martinez?

Gyorko. I play Martinez at first, Carpenter at 3rd and live with the defensive liabilities.

I'd take Lynn back.

Not me. I just don't think he is that good. Perfectly happy to give those innings to Flaherty, Reyes, and Hudson if and when we need reinforcements.

I don't recall Martinez being able to play first base.

Is your plan to give $100mm+ to a guy who has never played a position before, and has only played 125+ games once in his career?

Yes it is. And I teach him how to play first base. Because JD Martinez is a top 5 hitter who you can really say “the bat plays” about unlike Matt Adams.

It's entirely possible that J.D. Martinez's defense, which is atrocious even at his natural position, is so bad at first that it makes him a less valuable player than Jedd Gyorko, whom you want to move to the bench.

Giving him a six-figure deal to play first would be a questionable move at best.
