I am 2-3 beer a day person (or now that I'm on a diet a whiskey with 1 beer), I'm sure I'm fine but just to play it safe I just avoid that stuff. My wife worries, she pops ibuprofen like candy. She exercises regularly, she has some knee and back issues, and she takes the stuff as prev. maintenance thing. I haven't taken a vicodin since I was playing ball - 4 years ago now.

Prednisone stuff is ... kind of nasty. My Mom blames alot of ailments she has on that stuff. I don't know anything about it.
Prednisone can lead to overeating and/or weight gain, and problems sleeping, among other potential side effects. Not fun.
I am not going to be on it for long. My ortho PT bro in law happened to be in town. My issue is right up his specialty. He concurred with the steroid, and advised me to take the valium and oxycodone too because keeping the muscle tightening spasms down will help healing the nerve damage.

He said this is an injury I am wise to not do the usual blow off .

But yeah, I hate taking pills.

On ibuprofen, again I wouldn't pop it like a vitamin-in fact I have running friends that called it vitamin I. Probably not bad to use when it allows you to get going , as opposed to becoming inactive for the day, which is less healthy. lit I read says, Ibuprofen as a normal workout recovery hampers recovery.

My wife takes them like vitamin I. She did a marathon in '06, worst thing she ever did. Her knees and back haven't been right sense. She keeps going, and is great shape and is still [expletive] hot as hell looking, but it's like that Billy Crystal thing on SNL ... it's not how you feel, it's how you look. I do worry about her with that.

As far as the risks of long term prednisone... I watched it slowly reduce my mother to a frail, wrecked shell before she died.

She had lupus that attacked her skin. It came on in her early 50s. Before lupus, she was a vibrant healthy woman -- 5' 7" and probably about 140 lbs. The only thing they ever found that would help her flare ups was prednisone. They tried all kinds of other drugs, but every time she came off the prednisone, she'd have a horrible flare causing lesions and open sores all over her body. Slowly but surely, she shrunk. Her bones became brittle. She couldn't eat anything anymore. By the end -- in 7 or 8 years of dealing with the disease -- she was reduced to 5' even, and 85 lbs. She had multiple vertibrae fractures and a broken hip. She was in constant pain. She had a specialist that dealt only with pain management. She was on methadone (what they give drug addicts to try to wean them off of heroin IIRC). She had at least one stroke, if not more. Ultimately, CHF got her. But most of the actual pain she dealt with was all due to what the prednisone did to her bones and her stomach.

Nasty stuff in long term usage. Get off it soon, Freed.

that's awful with your Mom, Geddy. Really sorry man.

I appreciate the cautionary tale. my dose is 5 days then cut in half for 5. max. no refills. doctor I see next week may have me stop earlier.

I feel loads better physically and mentally since getting some direction from a real professional - my PT brother-in-law. He was quite familiar with my back issue-down to which vertabrae or whatever is likely the stem of the pain. he questioned my dosage and all, and set my path to take for this in the health care system (that's half the battle it seems in healthcare, getting hooked up with the right people - rather than people that don't listen to you, just give you drugs and send you on your merry way.)

Also has me started with a traction device. seems to be working. I may go for a run this weekend if pain is gone.

That is gut wrenching to hear. My mom was on that stuff for I don't know what, but I know it was a while. She isn't anything like geddy's mom, but she isn't so great. Her shoulder is just trashed, she had major back surgery 2 years ago. Her skeletal structure just seems wrecked. No clue if that's a connection.

5 days or a few weeks won't do anything of course, I wouldn't hesitate to take for short periods. But like most meds I would be careful - extra careful with that stuff.

Is your bro-in-law by me? I need to see someone about my neck. It's not terrible but it's not going away. And I swore I would only do my pullup routine today, but I did more than that because I'm addicted I think.

Agreed that in short periods, it can be a very helpful medicine. My wife has been on it once or twice too. I just get twitchy when I hear the word.

My mom was on prednisone for 20+ years. She tried other medications but they didn't help.

It ultimately killed her.

Yeah, I didn't know this was a thing, with counter-views and all.

Here is one. The counter-point author's punchable face is enough motivation to keep this drynuary rolling.

Get thru this 1st full weekend, and I should be good for duration. Probably cutting out the weekday evening drink was the biggest challenge. that and day 1 on the beach. I barbecued without a drink. I'll skip the monthly dude's night out with neighborhood friends.

And I see all the points in the counter-view. basically am just hitting the reset button. that's all.
