Palin holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics. She married Todd Palin, who had been her boyfriend from high school onward, on August 29, 1988, and briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations while also working as a commercial fisherman with her husband.
This is still his job as I understand it, along with working for BP.

This is among the most ridiculous things I've seen written on this forum. Absolutely ridiculous. And as a card carrying member of the GOP base, I'm incredibly insulted, and it just proves how little you and apparently many other democrats know about republicans, the religious right, and conservatives in general.
Yeah.

Jack Kemp was always incredibly unpopular, to the point of being a VP nominee.

Conservatives, evangelicals, and the Christian right - the base of the Republican party - have done far more for the less fortunate in America and across the globe than anyone. Nearly every major aid and relief agency active in america right now is Christian and many of those are evangelical at their core.

Yet, somehow we get berated with this mantra that we don't care. It's insane. It's ignorant. And it bugs me like nothing else, as I and my wife direct a compassion ministry and work in disaster planning and response, and we see the thousands that care greatly about the less fortunate and the billions that are given every year by people who apparently think caring for the less fortunate is "a sign of weakness".

Maybe she was appalled at how evil commercial fishermen are, so that's why she quit and is a former fisherman. Yeah, that's it.

You can't get much more change than having a "Soccer mom" as the V.P. Except for a Black man as president.

i dont doubt that *most* religious people (christians in this case) do care about the less fortunate...but it's easy for a politician to say that he/she is religious/christian to appeal to a base...but when they dont deliver the goods (hi, george w. bush), it really kinda spoils that whole claim and makes it moot...and usually republicans are the ones "pushing" that ideal...

but then again, i think religion plays way too much a part of the whole political process already

COMMERCIALfisherPERSON. i.e. non-angler.

How long before we see the first "Sportsmen for McCain" bumper stickers? If you see one, get as far away as you can. Break traffic laws if you must...

That's where the ideological difference comes in. Bush has been terrific for us in compassion ministry! We've been able to get ministries and people into places - prisons, and prisoners out of prison and into our recovery programs and churches - that we never could before. These public - private partnerships have been very effective on a local level, far more effective, imo, than the federally mandated programs that existed before.

My wive's former disaster response program, Citizen Corps, was started by the department of homeland securty under Bush and initiated locally by a republican mayor. They had a huge hand in aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina, housing thousands here in Oklahoma. A democratic mayor was elected locally and promptly killed the program. Why? Because she didn't believe in public-private partnerships, and faith-based initiatives.

If Gustav hits land in New Orleans and thousands are displaced again, who's going to be there now to take in, house, and feed these people? That's a lot of work to throw on an understaffed and under funded Red Cross.

That's a criticism of the local mayor, but it's an issue that shouldn't be bipartisan.
