They might be able to pop it with some cortisone if it's an impingement, so you should go because you might get instant relief. And as a veteran of cortisone shots in various parts of my body, the shoulder is by far the least painful place to get an injection. It's slightly worse than a regular shot, but nothing like the ones that I got in my heels (right and left) that I still have nightmares about. That hurt.lukethedrifter wrote:Update: shoulder still hurts. Considering doc.
It's funny having that uncle intimidation factor. Over the holidays challenged my professional soccer playing nephew to a foot race. He would kill me at this point but he begged off.

Ask your PT friend about the barbell bench press-and the form most people use.jim wrote:When I was younger and playing football, that was THE weight lifting exercise. They still use it at combines today to test strength. I have to admit that I bench too much - too frequently and with far too much weight. Part of it is just that old school mentality of associating bench press with true strength, and part of it is that I can bench a fair amount just like it. That natural inclination to try to improve what you are good at I guess. But I've had wrist problems from it, and now I suspect I'm having shoulder/neck/cranium pain from it although I can't be sure. Something somewhere put a little strain in my neck that goes up to the base of my skull, and I noticed last week after I did bench it seemed to aggravate it more. I really should stop, but I have this weird emotional attachment to it. I only do it 1x per week, but I should probably drop that to every other week or better yet.Freed Roger wrote:I can't recall the last time I bench pressed with barbell. Maybe 20 years ago.
Never cared much for it, and when I heard it isnt so great for the joints, I gladly ditched it. Using dumbbells is harder, and supposedly better.

The problem with dumbells is getting the damn things in place without hurting yourself. With bench it's already there, just waiting to be lifted.Freed Roger wrote:Ask your PT friend about the barbell bench press-and the form most people use.jim wrote:When I was younger and playing football, that was THE weight lifting exercise. I don't care about the pain. I can always learn to live with it. What I can't live with is making things worse. Guess I should go see a doc.jim wrote:They might be able to pop it with some cortisone if it's an impingement, so you should go because you might get instant relief. Blammo. Mystery injury after the gym. Pinched nerve like pain shoots from upper back down shoulder to fingertips.
All this fitness & injury talk and my filling the calendar with races is probably the cause.
Or is it the 4 days without beer&alcohol? Damn you joce!

Could be something in the neck? I'm dealing with a mystery neck issue (I think) that I can't figure out, although it's nothing as bad as yours. If I lift my hands over my head, or if I clasp my hands behind my back, I feel pain/tightness in the lower right side of my skull. The scary part was over the weekend I got a dizzy spell with it. I do alot of pushups, with burnout sets, and I'm thinking of backing off for a week or two and seeing if that doesn't help.Freed Roger wrote:Blammo. Mystery injury after the gym. It also could be the shoulder leading into the neck and up to the base of the skull. Who knows, everything is connected.
I began my official training for my friends challenge. My baseline is weight:206, pullups:11, burpees: 20, 1-mile run:8:24.
Let's see where I am in March. I was all fired up for this but I now realize that because I regularly workout, I may not really improve much on any of that stuff. I work really hard just to maintain, I'm basically about as good as I'm going to get I'm afraid. I might be able to tweak those numbers in the right direction a little, but I'm going to going to be running sub-7's or anything like that.

Re: Getting into shape
It is a pain that stems from the neck. Kind of like sciatic nerve(sp), only it shoots down arm instead of a hamstring. Weird...have some codeine leftover from broken finger, but it is buried in my backpacking gear.
I damn near checked in ER early this AM (a first ever for me) to start the XRays etc, but the thought of sitting there waiting in pain with sick people hacking instead of sleeping it off at home changed that.
Starting to go away. Time to head to work.
Side note: humbling. People that deal with pain, like a neighbor friend that is going thru some [expletive], they are some tough people.
