Watched this after seeing it mentioned a few times here. My takeaway:
[SHOW]
I'm all in on the owl theory.

It really is plausible.

I’m curious about how and why a guy who gets charged with murder has an Oscar winning documentarian on scene within days.

I Googled it because I was curious too. Apparently they originally had planned to make a documentary about the justice system. It wasn't originally just about Michael Peterson. They had two film crews, one for the prosecution and one for the defense. But a few months in the prosecution backed out of the deal and said they couldn't film anymore. So they pivoted to Peterson. After originally only filming official business, they started doing more and more of Peterson in his home and digging in to his story. And then the rest is history.

So the filmmaker contacted Peterson?

Yes, I believe so. The filmmaker had already won an Oscar for a previous true crime documentary and he pitched Michael Peterson to HBO as his next project. He picked Peterson from over 350 cases.

Of course. Wouldn’t make sense any other way. Also Peterson being the narcissist that he seems to be made him accept the offer. Or did he actually think the skeletons weren’t going to come out?
