I thought it was a good call that led to the PK, or at least I didn't have as big of a problem with it as a lot of people apparently do. Also, sucks. I was rooting for Mexico, thought there for a second they had it. I mean, they gave up 1 goal in their 3 group stage games, then gave up 2 goals in the last, like, 7 minutes of todays game. Turribly frustrating.

I think it's kind of dumb that a guy could have the ball just inside the corner of the box along the end line, surrounded by 3 defenders, no chance to score a goal or make a play, and yet if one of the defenders accidentally steps on his foot going for the ball then that team basically gets a free goal out of it.

At least in hockey the player needs a clear path to the goal for a penalty shot.

the only way that was going to be called is if he plays it up. Maybe it's a foul, but maybe he could have stayed on his feet. Nevertheless, Robben is magic.

For example, the penalty rules place an import on defenders who can make plays without fouling which requires speed, grace and intelligence/guile.

Someone here posted how WC soccer has it's flaws, but so does every other major competition. It seems though, that the better teams find a way to prevail in WC as they do in most other sports. Bad breaks and bad calls occur everywhere- but good teams find a way to deal and minimize those occurrences.

The only way you can hope to have close to a pure and fair competition in sport (ignoring PED) is race events, running, throwing, or weight lifting. zzzzzz.

ultimately, a bad team can not fake their way to a championship.
